Hello everybody :-)
Today we are going to take a walk around Alentejo, visiting lands located further inland of this vast region.
We have already had the opportunity to visit many cities and towns on the Costa Vicentina and share some of these records here, but we are missing some records of what we can find when we head more towards the center, where there is a lot of history and also a lot of heat, that heat that it gets abrasive.
Moura is a city that belongs to the district of Beja and was named after the Legend of Moura Salúquia.
It is located close to the left bank of the Guadiana River and is bathed by the Alqueva reservoir. Upon arrival we can see many olive trees and cork oaks that make the landscape now yellow due to the heat, a little more colorful due to the trees that stand out for their green color.
It was a summer day and the more than 40 degrees that were felt led us to deviate from the first stopping point and look for shade and cool things to drink or eat. It was unthinkable to walk under that sun.
Arriving in Moura, we parked in the center and immediately came across the Castle and its walls peeking out from the top of a small hill. No one was seen on the streets despite it being a weekday and it being mid-afternoon. We looked for a cafe and wandered through the city's alleys. The houses all adorned with flower pots, local shops, narrow alleys where no cars pass and finally a cafe with fresh water and air conditioning.
After this brief break we chose to walk a little further and were guided by children's splashes and laughter... We then found the Dr. Santiago garden, which in front has the Moura outdoor pools where almost the entire city should be, and we realized Well, why, the heat was immense and there wasn't a hint of wind that could help alleviate that feeling of suffocation, nor was it okay in the shade.
The garden was very beautiful, very well looked after with many trees, a gazebo and even a lake. The view from the garden balcony is magnificent and in the distance the large lake awaited us.
At the end of the day we headed towards Alqueva (which was our starting point of the trip).
The Alqueva Dam began to be built in the mid-80s but was only completed in 2002, and it was in this year that the floodgates closed and the largest artificial lake in Europe was born. At this time of year we can enjoy the river beaches, boat trips and all the nautical activities available, however it is always a time with a lot of people. I recommend visiting, but if you really want to experience the experience and calm of the lake, winter is a great option. If you want, you can even sleep on a boat in the middle of the lake :) there are several activities available for those who don't like being quiet and peaceful, simply relaxing and enjoying the view.
That's all for today, I hope you enjoyed it :)
