Hello everyone :)
Today we are going to Peniche and make a digital visit to an absolutely amazing place, in the best sense of the word!
The city is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, located on a peninsula and is famous for its rocky coastline and amazing beaches, such as Praia do Baleal, Praia da Gamboa, Praia do Medão Grande and of course, Praia dos Supertubos.
In recent years, the city of Nazaré has taken some of the prominence away from Peniche with regard to surfing, but even so, it remains an extremely important place for the practice of this sport and is always known for its majestic waves.
Today's main subject is not about the history or the center of the city, but is about a peculiar place located on the north coast, where we can see the cuts in the cliffs that provide unmistakable and unparalleled characteristics.
The view is spectacular, i would even say breathtaking, and there are several points of interest that stand out along the coast, all marked by plaques that are easily identifiable from a distance and designed in such a way that they stand out from the surrounding scenery.
From the beginning it is possible to observe fishermen on the terraces of these cliffs, as well as in the "pesqueiros", which are suitable places for fishing and are indicated by a yellow fish placed on a pole.
As you can see in some of the photos, some of the fishermen don't just pick up a fishing rod and sit there relaxing in the sun with the line taut waiting for the signal to pull, NO! They, in fact, need to have a daring and adventurous sense to penetrate through those millenary cracks, climb to the top of the cliffs and remain there, a few centimeters from the abyss, facing the temperament of the agitated waters that announce themselves with a certain violence against the rocks below and that in an impulse rise several meters above the cliffs.
Over there, the largest traditional fishing port and the underlying bustle ensure that its most authentic facet is not lost, the greatest value being the people of that land, real people, true and with determination!
This visit was made as a family, because the main objective of these movements is to take the little ones to discover new places and change their routines, and in this particular place the children were enchanted.
As they themselves described it, it felt like they were in a fortress by the sea with so much to explore and so many rocks to jump over, and taking the fruit of their imagination, reality is not very far from fiction, because that's what it's all about when we dedicate some time visualizing the place and trying to decipher its origin and shape.
Authentic monuments created by nature itself over thousands of years.
For this reason, we stopped for a few moments so that they could give free rein to their imagination and so it was possible to absorb this landscape, the noise of the waves and the smell of the sea air.
I've never known a coast like this, i confess that i had been here a few years ago, but this part went completely unnoticed to me, certainly because i didn't do the proper research on the place, because knowing that it exists, it becomes unthinkable to go there and not see this work of art with your own eyes!
I was amazed by nature and what it is capable of doing.
In the distance we see sailboats passing by and i imagine how the view of this coast across the sea will be.
But this city has more than its beaches and cliffs.
The legends of "Senhora dos Remédios" and "Senhora da Ajuda" or the legend of "Passos de D. Leonor" are associated with the municipality of Peniche.
The first two refer to the discovery of the mentioned Marian images in caves, after being hidden for years, and explained by the Muslim presence in the territory.
The legend of "Passos de D. Leonor" deals with the recurring theme of forbidden love between members of rival families that necessarily ends in tragedy.
It gave rise to two well-known places on the Marginal Sul, "Passos de Dona Leonor" and "Frei Rodrigo".
This visit will continue in later articles where i will shift the subject from the coast and approach the most central part of the city.
I hope you enjoyed :)
That's all for today
