Right next to the Santuario de la Victoria, patron saint of Malaga, is the Alfonso XII park or gardens.
It is also known as the Military Garden as it is located on the same block as the city's former private Military Hospital.
It is also officially known as the Plaza de Alfonso XII.
After the Disentailment it became the only green space and orchard of the Convent that was on the site, the Convento de la Victoria.
The design we see today was made by José María de Sancha in 1877.
These gardens are considered to be of cultural interest.
They have a great variety of vegetation and a great botanical value, considered a heritage asset.
As it is located next to the Sanctuary, visited by thousands of tourists, it has also had an impact on the people who visit the city.
Many species of plants and trees have been preserved here for centuries.
In ancient times these gardens were an area destined for cultivation and to be developed as orchards and gardens of the Friars Minims of San Francisco de Paula. This is the reason for its great importance.
From its paths you can see parts of the Sanctuary of La Victoria.
At the time of my visit, the Sanctuary was closed, so I found out its opening hours in order to visit it.
In former times this park was open to the public 24 hours a day, but for some years now it has been closed at night to avoid inconveniences.
The green areas were remodelled in 1988, have a great quality in their variety and are very well preserved. In the 19th century it was transformed into the small botanical garden we see today.
We can see large grevilleas, jacarandas and an old cica revoluta or dwarf palm tree, among other species.
You can stroll along the shady, tree-scented paths, and it is very cool in the summer.
It has a very colourful playground where at certain times of the afternoon parents take their children to play and the park fills with joy.
In 2001 the park lost its most exotic species, a ginkgo biloba.
It is very pleasant to sit on the benches, enjoy the view, the plants, the pigeons and other birds, and above all the coolness and shade offered by this beautiful old park, whose history is very symbolic for the city.
Its doors are open from 8am to 10pm in summer and until 8pm in winter.
It is worth walking around this place because it also has wonderful views of the Santuario de la Victoria which I will bring you all soon.
I hope you have enjoyed this beautiful park, so particular. Best regards to all of you and see you next time.
