It didn't take much to know that I would fall in love with the Greenwich Observatory, and as a Geographer, one of my dreams was to visit that place someday. Today I am taking my friends from Hive and Pinmapple, to what was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had.
At the Royal Observatory of Greenwich, as some of you may be imagining, is the zero degree of longitude, it is what we know as the Greenwich Meridian.

No se necesitaban demasiados datos para saber que yo me enamoraría del Observatorio de Greenwich, y es que como Geógrafa, uno de mis sueños era conocer ese lugar algún día. Hoy los llevo mis amigos de Hive y Pinmapple, a lo que fue una de las experiencias más alucinantes que viví.
En el Real Observatorio de Greenwich, como algunos estarán imaginando, se encuentra el grado cero de longitud, es lo que conocemos como Meridiano de Greenwich.
Where is Greenwich and what is it like?
Greenwich is a part of the city that lies to the east of the heart of London. By public transport you get there in about 40 minutes, and walking can take about 3 hours (yes, it's a long walk). I took the tube and arrived very quickly to this area, which itself looks like a large town or a small city.
Greenwich from my point of view, embodies the romanticism of London in terms of that touch of movie that it usually offers to all of us who do not live there. Its delicate architecture, its colors, its perfectly organized streets. Although it is obvious that you are in London (as is the case with Nothing Hill), Greenwich comes to have its particularity, like every corner of this huge cosmopolitan city.
The day I visited Greenwich it was cloudy and the sun came out, it rained and it stopped raining, and so on, something very characteristic of London. This became something very pleasant, as it left in every landscape I visited, an extra touch of magic, which for any Londoner is an everyday thing, but for me, not being used to it, it is a blessing. The surfaces were wet and therefore changed its color, and in the unevenness of the streets formed small puddles of water that reflected the trees and the sky to perfection.
In Greenwich there is a market that I did not get to visit, some beautiful bookstores and also has a university.

Greenwich es una parte de la ciudad que se encuentra al este del corazón de Londres. En transporte público llegas en unos 40 minutos, y caminando puedes tardar alrededor de 3 horas (sí, es una caminata larga). Yo tomé el metro y llegué muy rápido a este sector, que parece en sí mismo un pueblo grande o una ciudad pequeña.
Greenwich desde mi punto de vista, encarna el romanticismo de Londres en cuanto a ese toque de película que suele ofrecernos a todos los que no vivimos allí. Su delicada arquitectura, sus colores, sus calles perfectamente organizadas. Aunque es evidente que estás en Londres (tal como ocurre con Nothing Hill), Greenwich viene a tener su particularidad, como cada rincón de esta enorme ciudad cosmopolita.
El día que visité Greenwich se nublaba y salía el sol, llovía y dejaba de llover, y así, algo bien característico de Londres. Esto pasó a ser algo muy agradable, pues dejaba en cada paisaje que visitaba, un toque extra de magia, que para cualquier londinense es algo cotidiano, pero para mí que no estoy acostumbrada a eso, es una bendición. Las superficies quedaban húmedas y por eso cambiaba su color, y en los desniveles de las calles se formaban pequeños charcos de agua que reflejaban los árboles y el cielo a la perfección.
En Greenwich hay un mercado que no alcancé a visitar, unas librerías hermosas y también cuenta con una universidad.
Greenwich Park
To get to the observatory, I had to go deep into the park, which was huge. I didn't know how long it was until I walked down the street that led to my goal, and in fact at one point I thought I would never get there. At that time I hadn't gotten around to buying a SIM card for my cell phone, so I had no data and could only locate myself by the signs around me. According to the map, the observatory was straight on foot, so I had to get there at some point.
I didn't want to spread out too much on the way there because I didn't want to be late and I didn't know how long it would take to get there and then, I had no idea how long my visit would last at degree zero of the earth, so I didn't stop too much, but just took a few unavoidable shots.
My entrance to the park was via King William Walk.
El Parque de Greenwich
Para llegar al observatorio, tenía que adentrarme en el parque, que era enorme. No supe cuán largo era hasta que no caminé por la calle que me llevaba hasta mi objetivo, y de hecho en un momento pensé que jamás llegaría a destino. En ese entonces no me había avivado de comprar una tarjeta SIM para el celular, por lo que no tenía datos y solamente me ubicaba por los carteles que me rodeaban. Según lo que salía en el mapa, el observatorio estaba derecho caminando, así que tenía que llegar en algún momento.
No quise dispersarme demasiado en el camino de ida porque no quería que se me hiciera tarde y desconocía cuánto tiempo tardaría en llegar y luego, no tenía idea de la duración de mi visita en el grado cero de la tierra, así que no me detuve demasiado, sino que tan solo hice algunas tomas inevitables.
Mi ingreso al parque fue por la calle King William Walk.
The Royal Observatory at Greenwich
Well, I arrived at a magnificent work of science and I had no idea of the spectacle I was about to witness.
First of all, the observatory surprised me with an exquisite panoramic view of London that I was completely unaware was there. I expected to see the line on the ground and that was it.
I stood contemplating that beauty while I took some pictures, and noticed the perfection of the city skyline expanding in front of me, perfected by a sun that was beginning to peek through the clouds. It was undoubtedly a magical moment, and when I was looking at the photos to share with you, I noticed that I took a lot of them (of course they are not all here), it seems that I wanted to make sure to save that moment, haha.
The observatory offers a lot of information about the meridians and allows you to pass through spaces outside full of information, but it also has some rooms inside, in a museum that offers this attraction, where there is a planisphere, maps, and different elements related to the measurement of the globe and its positioning in the Solar System. Something quite interesting to learn, but I must confess that I did not read all that, as I had not yet reached the meridian itself and that was my main objective.
El Real Observatorio de Greenwich
Bueno, llegué a una magnífica obra de la ciencia y yo ni siquiera tenía idea del espectáculo que estaba a punto de presenciar.
En primer lugar, el observatorio me sorprendió con una vista panorámica exquisita de Londres que desconocía por completo que había allí. Yo esperaba ver la línea en el piso y listo.
Me quedé contemplando aquella belleza mientras tomé algunas fotos, y noté la perfección del perfil urbano que se expandía frente a mí, perfeccionado por un sol que empezaba a asomarse por entre las nubes. Fue sin dudas un momento mágico, y cuando estaba viendo las fotos para compartir con ustedes, noté que saqué muchísimas (claro que no están todas aquí), parece que quería asegurarme de guardar ese momento, jaja.
El observatorio ofrece mucha imformación sobre los meridianos y permite transitar espacios en el exterior repletos de información, pero también tiene algunas habitaciones dentro, en un museo que ofrece esta atracción, en donde hay un planisferio, mapas, y diferentes elementos vinculados con la medición del globo terráqueo y su posicionamiento en el Sistema Solar. Algo bastante interesante de aprender, pero debo confesar que no leí todo eso, pues aún no había llegado al meridiano en sí y ese era mi principal objetivo.
Greenwich Meridian

On the sides of the line, there were the names of different cities recognized worldwide, indicating whether they were located to the west or to the east. And I found Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. I took a picture of it, if you pay attention you will be able to see the name there, although it is a little difficult because the sun was just shining.
Basically the concept of any meridian is that it joins the north pole and the south pole of the earth. All meridians in this way, meet at one and the other point, but separate when "crossing" the earth's surface. In order to establish a measure, it is necessary to start somewhere, and that is why it was established as zero meridian or first meridian the Greenwich Meridian, which crosses the district with the same name.
These lines are arranged perpendicular to the latitudes, of which the Ecuador (the line of the Equator), marks the zero degree of latitude.

El Meridiano de Greenwich
Bueno mis amigos, aquí estamos, una línea amarilla en el piso que luego “trepa” por una puerta y aparece de color rojo sobre ella. El mismísimo Meridiano de Greenwich bajo mis pies en el grado cero de longitud de la Tierra. Un deleite para cualquier amante de la Geografía, la Física, la Geofísica y demás.
A los costados de la línea, se encontraban los nombres de diferentes ciudades reconocidas a nivel mundial, indicando si se hallaban hasta el oeste o hacia el este. Y encontré a Buenos Aires, la capital de Argentina. Tomé una foto de ella, si prestan atención podrán ver allí el nombre, aunque está un poco difícil porque justo daba el sol.
Básicamente el concepto de cualquier meridiano, es que une el polo norte y el polo sur de la tierra. Todos los meridianos de esta manera, se juntan en uno y otro punto, pero se separan al “atravesar” la superficie terrestre. Para poder establecer una medida, es necesario empezar por algún lugar, y es por eso que se estableció como meridiano cero o primer meridiano al Meridiano de Greenwich, que atraviesa el distrito con el mismo nombre.
Esas líneas se disponen de manera perpendicular a las latitudes, de las cuales el Ecuador (la línea del Ecuador), marca el grado cero de latitud.

Return to the Park and calm weather
The truth is that today as I write this post, I remember that I had been quite stressed chasing my goal of reaching the Meridian, luckily I reached it. And I remember the stress because I am also overcome by the sense of calm I felt when I left the Observatory and was able to enjoy the park.
Although I really like the historical and scientific part of the places, what I enjoy the most is simply to walk, to relax, to be content, to receive the energy of the different places where I walk, and that park was waiting for me since I was crossing it at full speed to get to the observatory, hehe.
So on the way back I walked very quietly, I took pictures, I met a nice squirrel that passed nimbly from the street to a bench, where I could take a very nice shot of it.
I tried to sit down but the surfaces were wet, so I walked, I remember I made a Sun Salutation thanking for that moment and continued on my way to continue my afternoon in London.
Vuelta al Parque y tiempo de calma
La verdad es que hoy que escribo este post, recuerdo que me había estresado bastante persiguiendo mi objetivo de llegar al Meridiano, por suerte lo alcancé. Y recuerdo el estrés porque también me invade la sensación de tranquilidad que sentí cuando salí del Observatorio y pude disfrutar del parque.
Aunque me gusta mucho la parte histórica y científica de los lugares, lo que más disfruto es sencillamente caminar, relajarme, conten¡molar, recibir la energía de los diferentes sitios por los que paseo, y ese parque me estaba esperando desde que lo atravesaba a toda velocidad para llegar al observatorio, jeje.
Así que en el camino de vuelta transité muy tranquila, tomé fotos, me encontré con una simpática ardilla que pasó ágilmente de la calle a un banco, donde pude hacer una toma muy linda de ella.
Intenté sentarme pero estaban las superficies húmedas, así que caminé, recuerdo que hice un Saludo al Sol agradeciendo aquel momento y seguí camino para continuar con mi tarde en Londres.
The simple memory of this moment makes me sigh with happiness, it is one of those sighs of love that are born in the center of the heart. I feel blessed to have had the chance to be there.
