On the last weekend we made another trip up the west coast of the Algarve until a beach that almost looked like we landed on the moon.
The west coast of the algarve can be so raw and unspoiled and yet beautiful. When we were on this beach, there was hardly a soul there and on some corners of the beach you really had the feeling of being in another world.
Probably the only difference to the moon is, that there is not such a beautiful river like the Ribeira de Seixe that separates the district Faro from the district Beja. This is the perfect spot for these hot summer months and also great for bad swimmers and kids. Furthermore, the water gets warmer than the ocean.
That beach also is a fantastic surf spot and waves here can get quite big and powerful. But what impressed me the most was the small neighboring beach called Praia das Adegas, which is a nudist beach and can only be reached at low tide or by stairs from another point.
Luckily we could climb over some rocks and did not have to walk around and take the steps. This rather small beach absolutely looks like you landed on the moon. These sharp-edged rocks and their color are really reminiscent of a science fiction film about the moon or another planet.
While climbing over these rocks we made some interesting finds. On the one hand we discovered barnacles, which are considered an absolute delicacy here and some clams, on the other hand we discovered strange, round and slimy objects that we couldn't identify.
We´ve never seen something like this before and decided to better not touch it. Do You remember the first Alien Movie? That´s how it starts! ;)
Barnacles
Red Alien Egg?
The beach itself is amazing and offers so much to explore, like a natural tunnel, some smaller caves and lots of smaller rocks to climb on. Must be an absolute hotspot in summer and I guess it gets pretty packed, at least there is plenty of parking.
When we were there it was before lunch and there was still some fog in the air that made it even more mysterious and moon like.
After exploring that beach for about an hour we went up the many stairs I told before and made it a round trip. I guess I don´t have to mention that as soon as you have reached the top there are plenty of hiking tracks that lead you to other beaches nearby. As said in many posts before you can hike here forever and you will the most beautiful beaches.
Climbing these stairs after a 2 hour surf session can be the absolute final enemy.
