I have spent a number of years traveling and living in the #philippines, i'm often asked where I have enjoyed visiting the most, this is a difficult question to answer as every destination has different things to offer.
Today I will concentrate on my home town of Moalboal which is all about diving, it's a small community with a lot going on, well prior to the whole covid thing happening. It has a great variety of accommodation, from high end to backpackers hostels, plus a great mix of eateries and nightlife.
Predominately it is the backpackers that put the town on the map but over the years it has started to draw people in from all walks of life and has become the go to place to learn how to dive, with a large number of establishments offering anything form basic diving courses to specialist technical certifications.
The main draw in this area is the sardine shoal that lives on the shoreline, known as the sardine storm or run it is a spectacular sight to behold and here is one of the few places on the planet where you can witness this event year round. If you visit the area this is a must see, either diving or snorkeling it's out of this world.
Millions of fish.
Plus there's always the chance you may bump into one of these amazing gentle giants.
Other attractions in the area are island hoping tours and visiting the waterfalls at Kawasan, her you can take part in canyoneering or just chill out in the beautiful surroundings. In this shot you can see the wife and friends waiting to jump from the top of the waterfall.
Making a splash.
With lush rainforest all round its a great place to spend the day, take along a bite to eat and some swim gear and just soak up your surroundings.
So, what else can you do in Cebu? Well there's plenty, one favorite on many peoples to do list while here in the south of the island is to hike up to the highest point in the mountains. Osmena peak offers you a stunning view across the hills, in one direction you can see Negros island across the waters of the Tanon strait and in the other the beautiful tourist island of Bohol, I will write about these in part 2.
Most people take a motorcycle ride to the foot of the mountain and hike up but for us we have a friend with a gyrocopter so we get to fly over and get a fantastic view, this shot was taken by
on one of the many flights we have taken, you can too! more on that later.
High flyers.
OK, so you are in a tropical paradise and you want to lay on the beach all day and sip on a cocktail or two or three, for this you will probably find yourself heading to White beach, this is a short distance from the main diving area of Panagsama. It's a nice big beach with a bunch of bars and restaurants, a popular hang out for the locals at weekends so it can get busy.
For a more chilled vibe I suggest you hop on a bike and head south of Moalboal to Lambug beach it's a really quite place to hang out and close to Kawasan falls if you fancy doing the two in one day.
White beach Moalboal.
This shot of the beach was taken by me again while flying in 's gyro. This I would put right up there in my list of things to do while visiting the area. It is a exhilarating experience that can't be matched and gives you a birds eye view of the local area. As you can see it's truly beautiful from that perspective. And what's more it is not that expensive so I strongly suggest you give it a try.
Up and away.
View of Pescado island.
Well that's the south of Cebu pretty much covered, next time in part2 I will take you north to the little island of Malapascua and onwards, until then stay safe folks!
