Time for another nice little church. After weeks of mostly just sitting at home I ventured out again. I went south since I didn't want to go uphill, but when I reached a place called Saravali, I had to change my mind a bit. Saw this little church on a hill:
Mal wieder Zeit für eine nettes Kirchlein. Nach Wochen des Faulenzens bin ich endlich mal wieder etwas geradelt, diesmal Richtung Süden, da ich keine Lust hatte, bergauf zu fahren. Als ich einen Ort namens Saravali erreichte, mußte ich mich leicht umbesinnen. Sah diese kleine Kirche auf einem Hügel:
The hill top wasn't too high, but the last 50m or so it went up 10 or 20 metres. Didn't have to get off the bike, but I was panting like hell when I reached the church. The pain of doing virtually nothing for a few months.
Der Hügel war nicht sehr hoch, aber die letzten 50m ging es plötzlich 10 oder 20 m in die Höhe. Konnte bis nach oben fahren, aber ich keuchte wie ein Dampfross, als ich an der Kirche war. Der Schmerz des Nichtstuns.
This is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (ΙΕΡΟΣ ΝΑΟΣ ΚΟΙΜΗΣΕΩΣ ΤΗΣ ΘΕΟΤΟΚΟΥ, yeah, another one) in the village of Saravali. Couldn't find any info online, but from the plaque beside the main entrance I gather that it is fairly new. It was built from 1968 to 1977 & then right away renovated in 77.
Dies ist die Kirche Mariä Himmelfahrt (ΙΕΡΟΣ ΝΑΟΣ ΚΟΙΜΗΣΕΩΣ ΤΗΣ ΘΕΟΤΟΚΟΥ) im Dorf Saravali. Fand keine weiterführenden Infos online. An der Kirche selber heißt es aber, daß sie von 1968 - 77 erbaut & dann gleich 1977 renoviert wurde.
There is not much iconography on the outside of the church, only this scene showing the Virgin Mary on her deathbed (I assume). The entrance was open & a mass was going on, so I didn't want to stay in front of the door for too long, but the photo is not too bad, I think.
Sonderlich viel Ikonographie sieht man an der Außenseite der Kirche nicht, nur diese Szene von Maria auf ihrem Totenbett (nehme ich an). Der Eingang war offen & man hielt gerade eine Messe, weshalb ich nicht zu lange vor der Tür stehen wollte, aber das Foto ist auch so nicht schlecht, denke ich.
Location, location, location. From the church you have a nice view over Patras. In the lower right of the picture you can see the church yard with a small fountain.
Die Lage ist alles. Von der Kirche aus hat man einen guten Blick auf Patras. Unten rechts auf dem Bild sieht man den Kirchhof mit einem kleinen Brunnen.
When researching the church, I found out that there is actually a castle in Saravali. The 'Franks' built it in the time of the crusader states, in Greece called the Frankokratia. I didn't see it when I was there, but going downhill again, I found something strange, which looked like parts of pillars made from some kind of primitive concrete. & on Google maps you can see some structures which look like embrasures. I suppose I have to go there again to have a closer look. But now just a few more pics:
Bei der Suche nach Infos, fand ich heraus, daß es in Saravali sogar eine Burg gibt. Sie wurde von 'Franken' in der Zeit der Kreuzfahrerstaaten, in Griechenland Frankokratia genannt, erbaut. Als ich dort war, habe ich die Burg nicht gesehen, allerdings fiel mir, als ich wieder bergab fuhr, etwas auf, das wie Teile von Stützpfeilern aus primitivem Beton aussah. & auf Google Maps sieht man einige Strukturen, die wie Brüstungen erscheinen. Nehme an, ich muß nochmal hin, um mir das näher anzusehen. Aber jetzt nur noch ein paar Bilder:
