After and I got settled into our hotel room in downtown Burlington, we decided that it might be a good idea to get some food. We had gotten lunch at Wendy's on our way down to the airport in Detroit, but that was back around 11:30 in the morning. By now it was 5:00 and our stomachs were starting to grumble.
There are so many options when it comes to eating in Burlington, I think some might argue it is a foodies paradise. They have pretty much everything from the world renowned restaurants like "Hen of the Woods", to your local Kabob shop sitting on the corner.
One of the big themes in Burlington and the surrounding area of Vermont is "farm to table". It's just a fancy way of saying locally sourced fresh ingredients. I don't really swing that way, but I was also impressed to find that most every place in Burlington had at least one vegan or vegetarian option if not a whole section of the menu dedicated to it.
I think would have been right at home here if they had stopped on their way through from Montreal.
In the research I did, American Flatbread was considered to be one of the best places to get pizza in Burlington. It's actually a regional chain with about 11 locations, but I don't usually let things like that stop me when I am traveling. National chains might be a different story, but regional chains still have that uniqueness and flare that I appreciate when we are on the road.
The atmosphere in American Flatbread was quite chique. At least a little more than what and I are used to. There's a good chance we were underdressed for our visit, but then again, Burlington is a college town inhabited by all sorts of people, so we might not have been as out of place as we thought.
Just past the area you see above was another section where they had the large pizza oven that they used to make the pizzas. We weren't able to get a good shot of it, but trust me when I say it was there. The bar area that you saw in the other photos was also quite cool and they had a ton of staff manning it. It was crazy how many workers we saw floating around here and there for such a small establishment.
It shouldn't be much of a surprise to you that we started off with some drinks. I got a bourbon old fashioned, and got a captain and diet coke. They were both quite good and we had at least one or two of them. My wife felt that our waitress seemed a bit disinterested in us. Since we had just arrived we weren't sure if she was just having an off night or if it was the general "vibe" of Burlington. It turns out it was mostly the former.
I had decided before we went to Vermont that I was going to try and step a little bit outside of my wheelhouse and try some new things. The fact that they put fruit on a lot of dishes here was my first attempt.
This salad that we shared had apple slices and some candied pecans on top of it. It was glazed with some kind of balsamic vinaigrette. I'm more of a ranch and croutons sort of guy, so this was new territory for me.
It was actually delicious and at the end of the trip we agreed it was one of the best things we ate the whole trip.
Since it was American Flatbread, we definitely had to try the pizza. Usually when they say flatbread, you assume the long rectangular style, but in this case it was just a really thin crust pizza.
Even at a "fancy" place like this, they let you split the pie in half, so got half as "Revolution" which included organic tomato sauce, caramelized onions, mushrooms, mozzarella, grana padano, and fresh herbs. On my half of the pizza I went with "New Vermont Sausage" which consisted of house maple-fennel pork sausage, sun dried tomatoes, caramelized onions, mushrooms, mozzarella, grana padano, and fresh herbs.
We actually both agreed that we enjoyed my wife's side of the pizza a little better than my side. One big issue we had was the fact that we got a large pizza. With the salad as a starter, this meant we had quite a bit left over. Looking back now, we should have gotten a regular size. The problem is we didn't want to walk back to our hotel room yet. We kind of wanted to explore the downtown area and maybe hangout at a couple of places.
A bit hard when you have a box of pizza in tow. The other option was to just leave our leftovers, but when you are talking half a pizza, it's kind of hard to justify that. We ended up taking it and the remainder of the pizza provided us a nice late night snack as well as breakfast the next morning.
I highly recommend American Flatbread if you ever make it to Burlington or any of the other locations in Vermont. If I had been in a beer mood they had an exclusive tap list that might have been cool to check out. I'd definitely be down to try some of the other flavors of pizza as well.
With our bellies full, we wandered down the Church Street Marketplace (I'll talk about this more in another post) and eventually found ourselves at a local drug store where we picked up some bottled water for our hotel room.
Wouldn't you know it, just across the street from the CVS drug store was a Ben and Jerry's ice cream shop. It was like a sign from the heavens that we needed to stop in and get some ice cream. If you look in the bottom right corner of the photo above, you might just be able to make out a older homeless lady.
I got the impression she would sit outside the shop begging for change and when she would eventually get enough, she would come into the store and buy an ice cream scoop to eat. It was cute and tragic all at the same time.
is more of a salty snack person than a sweet tooth like me. She would just as soon sit down with a bag of Wavy Lays than an ice cream cone, so I got a scoop for myself and she had a few bites of it.
I went with Lights Caramel Action which is vanilla ice cream with salted caramel swirls, graham cracker swirls, and gobs of chocolate chip cookie dough.
It was amazing!
I highly recommend you pick up a pint if you see one in your local store.
It's pretty safe to say, our first night in Burlington left a pretty good impression. I can't wait to share more of our adventures with you in future posts.
On a side note, it is the first of November, that means it is Hive Power Up Day!
In honor of said day, I have powered up 700 Hive. I feel like my goal of 100K HP is getting closer every day! I'm not sure I will make it by the end of the year like I hoped, but I will get there eventually!
