Siargao is widely recognized as the Philippines' Surfing Capital, but other than riding the Cloud 9 waves, island hopping too is one of the activities available in Siargao. Guyam Island is one of the islands you'll visit, along with Naked and Daku. This tiny speck of an island with a small stretch of fine texture white sand and coconut trees can be walked around in about five minutes! It has a nearly perfect circular shape and fascinating coral structures, making it ideal for snorkeling. The rest of the island has been battered by rock formations. Guyam is a Filipino (Cebuano) word that means "ant" in English. It's not because there are a lot of ants around, but because of its small size. Guyam Island is maybe small in size, but its emerald glass-like waters, picturesque beachscape, and tropical paradise mixed with rock formations appeal more than able to compensate.
Hello Hivers, I'm back with another adventure to tell you before the Pandemic. We will defy time as I travel you back in time to Guyam Island, Siargao, Philipinnes. Let's start!
APPROACHING GUYAM ISLAND
On our third day in Siargao, we decided to take a tri-island tour for only 795 php ($16) per person, inclusive lunch and entrance fees. I believe this was the best deal we could find in the area. Well, as backpackers, we were really expert in finding the cheapest rate. After a long day of exploring Naked Island and getting baked at Daku Island, we boarded again on the boat and prepared for the final stop on the tour, the Guyam Island. The boatmen and tour guide informed us that we would be watching the sunset from that island, which piqued my interest. As the sun was slowly setting, we were eager to see what the small island had to offer. Well it’s great that we can now relax and unwind after the exhausting activities.
As we inched closer to Guyam Island, I couldn't help but notice how beautiful it was. A small clump of coconut palms was surrounded by white sand and glass water.
EXPLORING GUYAM ISLAND
Upon arriving, we were welcome by the island's white beach. There are also notably rocky beach section and it is one of its most distinguishing features of the island. You could perhaps sit on one of them near the sea and not even be bothered by the gentle waves. This will give a better view of the horizon and allow you to listen to the soothing sound of the waves.
There is a little kiosk that sells shakes with drinks like rum and tequila! Which perfect to quench our thirst. You can also eat their famous Guyum burger or a variety of delectable refreshments from their own snack bar.
Of course, our summer state in mind would be incomplete without a smoothie in hand.
This in hand was perfect while sitting on mats and pillows beneath the shade of massive coconut trees where we can either lie down and rest or take a quick power nap. It's simply heavenly to sip their tasty drinks while admiring the beautiful view of the island's shore. Aurgh! This is life!
As previously stated, the island may be small, but there is surely plenty of things to do here. You can even play a basketball game in their half-court if you still have a tremendous amount of energy after such an island hopping tour.
There are also some instagramablem spots on the island. There is a heart-shaped island made of wooden bamboo crafts that is ideal for couples like us.
There is a circular selfie corner made of bamboo twigs where you can feel the Bali vibe.
We noticed a bent coconut tree and thought it was interesting! So we climbed it and posed for a picture as if we were filming a pre-wedding event. 😃
Because of the trees all around, you won't need any huts or umbrellas to get some shade. It was wonderful to relax in their native-woven hammock while obtaining the island's blissful atmosphere and breeze.
The best part was swinging around the attached wooden swing in the ropes between two coconut trees, which took me back to my childhood memories of playing in my hometown's plaza.
As we walked around the island, we came across some small natural pools with crystal clear waters. We dove right in and spent a few minutes reflecting on how fortunate I am to have the opportunity to visit this astounding island.
In the middle of the rocks, there is a hut made of woods. And we also noted some cottages with swings in the shoreline.
The island also offers stand up paddle boat as a way of meditating and able to enjoy the seas while riding a sturdy and stable paddle board through waves.
We then went swimming in the turquoise waters, snorkeling on the fringing corals, and snapping pics with the entire island in the background.
As the sun set, we simply sat on the beach, exhausted but content after a full day of excitement, exploring , sunbathing, and snorkeling. However, we were treated to a spectacular array of sunset reflecting off the water. It was one of the most gorgeous sunsets I'd seen in a long time. And to spend it on a small island with my favorite date, sitting on a fine white sand. That was sheer happiness!
I can still remember how it feels to be chilling under a palm tree in the warm sunshine and I'm currently daydreaming that I am here again at this memorable place while writing this blog. How I miss the island life. So if your planning to visit Siargao, consider taking an island hopping tour and spend a few hours exploring this idyllic destination!
