It was founded by the chief disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa.His name is Swami Vivekananda.Due to its spiritual and religious significance, people from all over the world come here to immerse themselves in the spiritual vibe of this place.
Swami Vivekananda came to Calcutta in 1897. He had a small group of disciples with him. The purpose of his visit was to establish a monastery. One of these was the Belur monastery, which became the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission.
Besides the Belur monastery, he established another monastery in the Champavat district of the Himalayas.The purpose of both these monasteries was to train young men to become ascetics and ultimately help them find liberation. Temple is the main attraction of Belur Math. The temple was designed by Swami Vivekananda and is a fusion of Indian and Western architecture.
The temple looks more like a church. The temple's main entrance and inner pillars are reminiscent of Gautama Buddha. Inside the temple is the idol of Ramakrishna. Swami Vivekananda and his other disciples used to meditate and pray here.
Besides, the attractions of Belur monastery are Swami Brahmanandji Temple, Sarada Devi Temple, Samadhi Peeth, Old monastery and Ramkrish Museum.The museum is closed on Mondays.
