Greetings to the hivers of the community.
Today I propose that we come and take a closer look at a site that I consider very interesting in the area of Havana's Puerto Avenue. It is a monument that I have not heard of with the resonance that is mentioned of other monuments in the oldest part of the capital.
What causes me the most admiration about this place is the presence of gravel-type stones on the floor of the pedestal. Every time I pass by, I see the same scene, as if they were original components of the monument. And although I have never asked about such a thing, I think with almost certainty that they were added for another reason.
And I do not see any connection to the majestic monument erected to José de la Luz y Caballero, who is said to have been the first to teach us how to think, and who was also the teacher of our José Martí and a good part of his generation back in the 19th century.
The truth is that around the base of the monument the small stones are present in abundance, but well scattered like a protective layer of the stepped floor around the monument to the illustrious thinker and teacher.
The location, despite being very close to the constant movement of cars through the arteries of the port avenue, is a peaceful place where you can breathe the soft and purified air of wisdom.
The sitter is sitting as if he had just crossed his legs, with one hand resting on the pedestal, while with the other in his lap he looks up and looks from above at the another side of the bay, perhaps beyond Morro and La Cabaña, finding a philosophical solution to a concern of the restless youth of the time.
The seated figure diffused in bronze is life-size, its movement was reflected as life-like. As if wanting to give an anti-academic and relaxed attitude, it hints at the hidden spirit of freedom that induced the students.
It is good that, in gratitude for their great contributions to the people, large commemorative monuments are erected for them. But for me, personally, I would like them to be a little lower so that I could talk to them and have them share their experiences with us face to face. Furthermore, these great allegories almost always contrast and sometimes contradict their economic conditions and their social ideas, especially their humility.
But hey, the monument also has its own laws, and those chosen to be on the pedestals have to abide by them; or else they are left out of those stories. This monument to José de la Luz y Caballero, an essential Cuban in our history, who came to life at the very beginning of the 19th century and who left the physical plane in 1962, is a recognition, in the first instance, in the light of the knowledge that he put in the heads of the Cubans of the time.
I like this place because it is peaceful and because it invites reflection and meditation, since it takes me back in retrograde lines to the time when this eminent character was among the students, teaching and educating to overcome a raw and painful time of slavery and colonialism.

Saludos para los hivers de la comunidad.
Hoy les propongo que nos acerquemos a observar de cerca un sitio que considero muy interesante en la zona de la avenida del Puerto habanero. Es un monumento del que no he oído hablar con la resonancia que se menciona de otros monumentos en la parte más vieja de la capital.
A mí lo que más admiración me causa de este lugar es la presencia de piedras tipo gravilla en el piso del pedestal. Cada vez que paso cerca, veo la misma escena, como si las mismas fueran componentes originales del monumento. Y aunque yo nunca he preguntado por tal cosa, pienso casi con certeza que fueron agregadas por otro motivo.
Y es que no le veo ninguna conexión al majestuoso monumento erigido a José de la Luz y Caballero, de quien se dice que fue el primero que nos enseñó a pensar, y que además fue maestro de nuestro José Martí y de buena parte de su generación allá por el siglo XIX.
Lo cierto es que alrededor de la base del monumento están presentes en abundancia, pero bien diseminadas, las pequeñas piedras como una capa protectora del piso escalonado alrededor del monumento al ilustre pensador y maestro.
El emplazamiento, a pesar de estar bien cerca del trasiego constante de los autos por las arterias de la avenida del puerto, es un lugar apacible donde se respira el aire suave y purificado de la sabiduría.
El retratado está sentado como si acabara de cruzar las piernas, con una mano apoyada en el pedestal, mientras que con la otra en el regazo levanta la vista y mira desde lo alto al otro lado de la bahía, quizás más allá de Morro y la Cabaña, encontrando una solución filosófica a una preocupación de la inquieta juventud de la época.
La figura sedente difundida en bronce es a tamaño natural, como natural fue reflejado su movimiento. Como queriendo dar una actitud antiacadémica y relajada, insinúa el espíritu oculto de la libertad que inducía a los alumnos.
Es bueno que, en agradecimiento a sus grandes aportes a los pueblos, se les erijan grandes monumentos conmemorativos. Pero a mí, en lo particular, me gustaría que estuviesen un poco más bajos para poder conversar con ellos y que nos transmitan de tú a tú sus experiencias. Además, casi siempre esas grandes alegorías contrastan y a veces se contraponen con sus condiciones económicas y sus ideas sociales, sobre todo con su humildad.
Pero bueno, la monumentaria también tiene sus propias leyes, y los elegidos para estar en los pedestales tienen que acatarlas; o, de lo contrario, se quedan fuera de esas historias. Este monumento a José de la Luz y Caballero, cubano esencial en nuestra historia, que llegó a la vida en el mismo principio del siglo XIX y que dejó el plano físico en el año 1962, es un reconocimiento, en primera instancia, a la luz del saber que puso en la cabeza de los cubanos de la época.
A mí me gusta este lugar por apacible y porque invita a la reflexión y la meditación, ya que me traslada en líneas regresivas al tiempo en que este eminente personaje andaba entre los alumnos, enseñando y educando para superar una época cruda y dolorosa de esclavitud y colonialismo.
