Bari Castle, with its imposing walls, is the symbol of the city. Strolling through the streets of the historic center, it's impossible not to notice it!
We are in the Puglia region, in southern Italy. A visit lasts about a couple of hours and on some days it's completely free.

Il Castello di Bari con le sue imponenti mura è il simbolo della città. Passeggiando tra le vie del centro storico, è impossibile non notarlo!
Siamo nella regione Puglia, nel sud Italia. La visita dura circa un paio di ore e in alcuni giorni è completamente gratuita.

Bari Castle (also known as the Swabian Castle) is an important fortress dating back to the 12th century. Specifically, the first foundations were built in 1131, based on Byzantine structures.
Over the centuries, it has been restored and expanded, culminating in the magnificent structure we see today.
During the Renaissance, the Castle took on the appearance of a refined residence, with frescoes, decorated staircases, and statues. It was the home of Isabella of Aragon and her daughter Bona Sforza.
Later, this building was also used as a prison and barracks. A truly complicated history!
Il Castello di Bari (chiamato anche Castello Svevo) è un’importante fortezza che risale al XII secolo. In particolare, le prime fondamenta sono state edificate nel 1131 a partire da alcune strutture bizantine.
Nel corso dei secoli è stato restaurato e ampliato, fino ad arrivare alla meravigliosa struttura che vediamo oggi.
Durante il Rinascimento, il Castello aveva assunto l’aspetto di una dimora di classe, con affreschi, rampe di scale decorate e statue. Era l’abitazione di Isabella d’Aragona e della figlia Bona Sforza.
Successivamente, questo edificio è stato utilizzato anche come carcere e caserma. Una storia davvero complicata!

Today, the Castle is the most important museum in the city of Bari and hosts exhibitions from all over the country. Concerts and theater performances are also organized in the summer.
I love it when ancient buildings, rich in history, lose their original function but remain available to the public!
Al giorno d’oggi il Castello è la più importante sede museale della città di Bari e ospita mostre provenienti da tutta la Nazione. In estate sono anche stati organizzati dei concerti e degli spettacoli di teatro.
Mi piace quando gli edifici antichi, ricchi di storia, perdono la loro funzione originaria ma rimangono a disposizione della popolazione!

One of the most interesting areas of the visit is the section dedicated to the archaeological excavations. Here, you can appreciate the Byzantine foundations I mentioned at the beginning, and it's wonderful to see how humans have changed the way buildings are constructed over the centuries.

Una delle zone più interessanti della visita è la parte dedicata agli scavi archeologici. Qui è possibile apprezzare le fondamenta bizantine di cui vi parlavo all’inizio ed è molto bello vedere come l’essere umano ha cambiato il modo di costruire gli edifici nel corso dei secoli.
