Many people think you have to be some sort of ace technical diver to attempt to dive the wrecks of Chuuk Lagoon.
But this isn't really the case. While some of the wrecks are beyond the range of recreational SCUBA there are plenty that are not.
In fact, many of the more famous wrecks are easily dived by single tank recreational SCUBA divers. With the local guides, many novice divers will get to enter the wrecks in a safe and controlled way.
Another misconception its that it's all about wrecks. They have now been sunk for almost 90 years and many of the wrecks are now huge coral gardens
With vast amounts of fish and other animals that now call the wrecks home.
and they come in all shapes and sizes.
Even sharks are not uncommon in the lagoon but don't worry there are no great whites here most are small reef sharks.
One of the amazing things about the wrecks in Chuuk is the number of artifacts still on all the wrecks. While many artifacts have been recovered the shear number still means there is a lot to see.
Well, Hivers hope this has whetted your appetite for diving in Chuuk. Next time I'll start looking at some of the individual wrecks with a bit of their history and what they are like to dive now.
