Etten Island in Chuuk is now a small jungle overgrown island which is a far cry from its world war 2 History when Etten was the main Japanese fighter airfield in the lagoon and one of the main early American targets for Operation Hailstone.
The small island was leveled by the Japanese using Chuukies conscripted labor to turn it into an unsinkable aircraft carrier in the middle of the lagoon seen here in a navy reconnaissance photo from Ubisoft.
The only natural feature left is the small hill today from this google maps shot the basic outline is there but the jungle has reclaimed much of the island.
While the island has few inhabitants today it is a frequent stop as a surface interval if you are diving the shipwrecks or planes local to the island.
If you're lucky the locals will take you to visit some of the bomb-damaged buildings from the war.
This is the old control tower.
Here is a small shrine left by some Japanese divers close to the mooring area which would have been the end of the old runway.
You could just chill with the friendly local wildlife. I'm sure saving bits of bacon from breakfast had something to do with it.
Or even try and beat the boatmen at the local game of checkers. I'm sure they cheat.
Well, Hivers I hope you enjoyed the short surface interval on Etten Island there is a lot of history here if you want to dig around.
