De Haan
We were also in De Haan on the North Sea on our trip to Belgium.
While writing this post, I realised that not a single post from De Haan has appeared on pinmapple yet. Good, then I'll be the first.
De Haan is the seaside resort of Klemskerke.
Klemskerke was first mentioned in 1003. De Haan, on the other hand, was not mentioned until 1889.
Back then, King Leopold II granted permission to build on the dunes. At the same time, he had a golf course built, which was financed by the profits from the exploitation of the Congo.
Oh well, the whole thing was financed by slavery. If I had known this on site, I would have looked at the village with different eyes. It's beautiful, but knowing why gives you a different perspective. Of course, we also saw the golf course and thought nothing of it.
The building regulations at the time included not exceeding a certain height, the houses had to be detached and the architectural style had to be Anglo-Norman. However, the architectural style was no longer prescribed in 1960.
Nevertheless, this makes De Haan a unique seaside resort on the Belgian North Sea coast.
When we were there, we quickly realised that this place was different from Ostend or Blankenberge. You didn't immediately have the feeling of being in a mega tourist metropolis with its hotel bunkers, even if the beach promenade was partly made up of houses from the 70s. Most of it was still beautiful.
This sculpture is by Xu Zhen and is supposed to represent an ancient figure. Peking ducks are actually sitting on the arms.
It has been part of an art triennial on the coast of Flanders since 2003.
Here you can already see that not everything is designed for mass.
This road was part of the village about 200 metres from the beach.
These rows of houses are already part of the beach on one side and have a small park on the other side.
Even though we don't have children, a roundabout like this is always nice to look at.
This photo was taken from the railway station or a kind of S-Bahn station. From here you can reach the beach through this street.
We were there by bike and then cycled back towards the campsite on the main road after our visit.

Beim schreiben dieses Posts fand ich raus, dass bis jetzt noch kein einziger Post von De Haan auf pinmapple erschienen ist. Gut so, dann bin ich jetzt der Erste.
De Haan ist der Badeort von Klemskerke.
Klemskerke wird im Jahr 1003 zum ersten Mal erwähnt. De Haan dagegen erst 1889.
König Leopold II erteilte damals eine Genehmigung für eine Bebauung des Dünenabschnittes. Gleichzeitig ließ er einen Golfplatz errichten, der von den Gewinnen der Ausbeutung des Kongos finanziert wurde.
Oha, das ganze ist dann durch die Sklaverei finanziert worden. Wenn ich das vor Ort gewusst hätte, hätte ich das Dorf mit anderen Augen betrachtet. Es ist zwar schön, aber wenn man weiß warum, gibt das einen anderen Blickwinkel. Den Golfplatz haben wir natürlich auch gesehen und uns dabei nichts gedacht.
Die Auflagen für die Bebauung damals waren unter anderem, dass eine bestimmte Bauhöhe nicht überschritten werden durfte, die Häuser mussten freistehend sein und der Baustil musste im anglo-normannischen Stil sein. Allerdings wurde der Baustil im Jahre 1960 nicht mehr vorgeschrieben.
Trotzdem macht das De Haan zu einem einzigartigen Badeort in der belgischen Nordseeküste.
Als wir dort waren, merkte man schnell, dass dieser Ort anders war als Oostende oder Blankenberge. Man hatte nicht sofort das Gefühl, in einer Mega Touristenmetropole mit seinen Hotelbunkern zu sein, auch wenn die Strandpromenade teilweise mit Häusern aus den 70ern bestand. Der großteil war immer noch schön.
Diese Skulptur ist von Xu Zhen und soll eine Antike Figur darstellen. Auf den Armen sitzen tatsächlich Pekingenten.
Sie ist Teil einer Kunstriennale an der Küste Flanderns seit 2003.
Hier kann man schon erkennen, dass nicht alles nur auf Masse ausgelegt ist.
Diese Strasse war Teil der Dorfes ungefähr 200 Meter vom Strand entfernt.
Diese Häuserreihen sind auf der einen Seite schon Teil des Strandes und auf der anderen Seite mit einem kleinen Park versehen.
Auch wenn wir keine Kinder haben, ist so ein Karussell immer schön anzuschauen.
Dieses Foto ist vom Bahnhof bzw eine Art S-Bahnhof entstanden. Von hier kommt man durch diese Strasse zum Strand.
Wir waren mit dem Fahrrad dort und sind dann nach unserem Besuch wieder Richtung Campingplatz an der Hauptstrasse gefahren.
