Plaza del Callao is located on one side of Madrid's Gran Vía and very close to emblematic places such as Puerta del Sol, Plaza de España or the Madrid of the Austrians. Well communicated, the fastest and most comfortable way to get there is by public transport. The square has a metro station (Callao) with several exits, one of them in the same square. To get there, in addition to metro lines 5 and 3, which are those that pass through the Callao metro station, we have the option to take line 2 and get off at the stations of Sol or Santo Domingo.

Emblematic buildings
Leaving the Callao metro station, we find the FNAC building, formerly Galerías Preciados. A tall building with a red brick facade covered with a large neon panel, in which images and colors follow one another at an advertising rhythm 24 hours a day. Advertising that reminds us that we are in one of the great shopping areas of Madrid. Next to the FNAC is El Corte Inglés, another large shopping center.

Saliendo de la estación de metro de Callao, de frente nos encontramos con el edificio de FNAC, antigua Galerías Preciados. Una construcción alta con una fachada de ladrillo rojo cubierta de un gran panel de neón, en el cual se suceden las imágenes y los colores a un ritmo publicitario 24 horas al día. Publicidad que nos recuerdan que estamos en una de las grandes zonas comerciales de Madrid. Junto al FNAC se encuentra El Corte Inglés, otro gran centro comercial.
On the right hand side we can see the Callao Cinema. With a facade with soft tones and decorated with geometric elements of Art Deco style, it is a beautiful building. Next to the Callao Cinema, rises the Capitol building. The images of Álex Angulo and Santiago Segura defying the force of gravity come to mind.
Behind us, at number 46 of Gran Vía, the Palacio de la Prensa stands out. One of the tallest buildings on Gran Vía. Red brick and classic style, like other buildings adjacent to the square, is also adorned with its neon billboard.
Finally on our right we can delight you with the building La Adriatica. A mano derecha podemos ver el Cine Callao. Con una fachada con tonos suaves y adornada con elementos geométricos de estilo Art Decó, es una preciosidad de edificación. No es raro encontrarse, de vez en cuando, con el glamour del estreno de alguna película. Entonces la alfombra roja, los focos, los artistas y sus fans se convierten en los protagonistas del centro de Madrid.
Junto al Cine Callao, se eleva el edifico Capitol. Coronado por las luces de neón de la popular valla publicitaria de una tónica que siempre que la veo me recuerda, no lo puedo evitar, la película "El día de la bestia" (1995) de Álex de la Iglesia. A mi memoria me llegan las imágenes de Álex Angulo y Santiago Segura desafiando a la fuerza de la gravedad.
A nuestra espalda, en el número 46 de la Gran Vía, destaca el Palacio de la Prensa. Uno de los edificios más altos de la Gran Vía. De ladrillo rojo y estilo clásico, como otros edificios colindantes a la plaza, también está adornado con su valla publicitaria de neón.
Finalmente a nuestra derecha podemos deleitaros con el edificio La Adriática. De noche, una iluminación suave y rosada sobre su fachada, además de resaltar los elegantes detalles del edificio, transmite una sensación de sosiego entre el frenesí de las parpadeantes luces publicitarias de los edificios cercanos. Creo que podría estar horas observándolo, ajeno a todo el ruido y luces que de forma permanente asaltan sin tregua al viandante que pasea por aquí.

Estas Navidades pudimos presenciar la instalación de un Belén gigante celebrando la Navidad. En otras ocasiones se han celebrado conciertos de música en directo. Este mes de enero como parte de la Feria Internacional de Turismo (FITUR 2025) celebrada en Madrid se usó este espacio diáfano para promocionar la Costa Blanca como destino turístico.
La Costa Blanca se encuentra en el suroeste, en la provincia de Alicante. El día 22 de enero me topé con un cubo formado por pantallas luminosas que proyectaban videos promocionando las bondades turísticas de la Costa Blanca. Cubo que formaba parte de la promoción de los ayuntamientos alicantinos bañados por el mar Mediterráneo.

That afternoon we had the opportunity to collect the beautiful smiles that were distributed generously by some young girls dressed in the costume of these festivities. Among them was the queen of the festivities dressed in a beautiful red and white dress. For a few minutes I was captivated by the elegant and fluid dance of the queen and her captains.
No sólo hubo videos de publicidad. Ese día 22, el ayuntamiento de Sax nos acercaba las Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos. Esa tarde tuvimos la oportunidad de recoger las bellas sonrisas que repartían de forma generosa unas jóvenes vestidas con el traje propio de esas fiestas. Entre ellas destacaba la reina de las fiestas vestida con precioso vestido blanco y rojo. Durante unos minutos me detuve cautivado por el baile elegante y fluido de la reina y sus capitanas.

Con el atardecer las luz del ambiente va mutando. Pronto van tomando protagonismo las luces de la ciudad. La plaza se transforma en un lienzo en el que grandes pantallas luminosas van pintando un paisaje diferente. Los tonos azules, verdes, rosados,… se van sucediendo a ritmo regular dando un aspecto, en ocasiones, casi onírico. Hasta la vuelta del astro Sol, la luz artificial va moldeando los edificios. Se acentúan los detalles decorativos, los contrastes de luz y sombra otorgan un mayor volumen a las edificaciones cercanas. Definitivamente, la Plaza de Callao adquiere un encanto muy especial.
A second hand record store
And before I say goodbye, I can not fail to mention “La Gramola”, one of the few second hand record stores that survived the arrival of the digital disc first, and then the internet. I have very good memories of this store. I think I met La Gramola in Montera street, in a second floor, more than three decades ago. There I met a great connoisseur of the musical styles that interested me in those years. This was not a person who was only dedicated to buying records and then selling them. The owner of La Gramola was a great music lover, and could be a great advisor.

Y antes de despedirme, no puedo dejar de mencionar a “La Gramola”, una de las pocas tiendas de discos de segunda mano que sobrevivió a la llegada del disco digital primero, y después a internet. Tengo muy buen recuerdo de esta tienda. Creo haber conocido a La Gramola en la calle Montera, en un primer piso, hace ya más de tres décadas. Ahí conocí a un gran entendido en los estilos musicales que me interesaban en esos años. No se trataba de una persona que sólo se dedicara a comprar discos para después venderlos. El dueño de La Gramola era un gran amante de la música, y podía llegar a ser un gran consejero.
Ahora regentan la tienda sus hijos. Hace algunos años que no me paso por la tienda, pero si te gusta la música en formato de disco de vinilo, tienes que visitar esta tienda. No te defraudará.
