Our recent trip to Nambalan River in Mayantoc, Tarlac was one for the books. What started as a simple family outing turned into an adventure filled with unexpected detours, shared laughter, and a lot of patience on the road.
First of, Nambalan River, nestled in the picturesque town of Mayantoc, Tarlac, #Philippines. The journey takes you through scenic views of verdant rice fields, lush foliage, and towering fruit-bearing trees, setting the tone for the natural beauty awaiting you.
We set off late after lunch thinking the drive won't take long, excited for a relaxing afternoon by the river. The plan was simple: enjoy the scenery, have a picnic, and make some good memories with the family. But as soon as we hit the road, we were reminded that it was a holiday—something we completely forgot to factor in. The traffic quickly became heavier than we anticipated, with many other families apparently having the same idea of heading to nature spots for a break.
To make things more challenging, my niece was the one driving. While she’s more than capable behind the wheel, the drive turned out to be more stressful than any of us had expected. The route to Nambalan involved narrow streets, a lot of oncoming vehicles (since it was only a two-way road), and stretches where we weren’t even sure if we were on the right path. At one point, the road seemed endless, and we started to worry that we might have taken a wrong turn. But thanks to Google Maps.
Despite the tension in the car and the occasional sighs of frustration—especially from my niece who was driving—we tried to keep the mood light. We cracked jokes, and kept looking forward to finally reaching the river.
When we finally arrived at Nambalan River, another small challenge greeted us: parking. It was scarce, as expected during a holiday, but thankfully, the locals had turned this into a small business opportunity. A number of them were helping visitors find parking spots and even assisting with carrying picnic bags down to the riverbanks. It was actually a big help, and their warm hospitality made the hassle a bit easier to bear.

Then came the real adventure—going down to the river.
As we started descending, I silently began praying. I had never in my life experienced navigating such a steep stairway, and I quickly realized this was not your typical “stairs at the mall” situation. It is a narrow concrete walkway leading to the river I had to balance my body and legs carefully with each step—it felt like my own little hiking challenge.
At the bottom, I was greeted by a bridge made of bamboo, and for a second, I felt stuck in place. My mind screamed, “You’re not built for this!” But my niece, ever the voice of reason, reminded me that even if I did fall, the water wasn't deep and I’d be okay. Plus, she added, the bridge was really short—it just looked intimidating at first.
Then came the next obstacle: slippery rocks under the water, which you had to step on to get to your assigned picnic hut. Picture me, arms stretched out for balance, fussy and overly dramatic (yes, I’ll admit it), as I tried not to fall into the water or embarrass myself too much in front of others.
Eventually—after all my drama queen moments—we made it to our hut.
Bamboo picnic huts are available for rent, providing shaded areas to relax and enjoy the surroundings. The use of these huts typically incurs a fee of around ₱500.
I had to sit down right away because my legs were literally shaking. I was exhausted! You see, I grew up walking on parking lots and nicely paved streets, so walking in nature, especially over rocks, bamboo, and steep paths, always surprises me. It’s a totally different world out there—and it definitely humbled me a bit.
Now, the fun part!
As expected, my niece’s son was the first one to jump into the river. Full of energy and excitement, he immediately headed for the faster-flowing part of the water, splashing around like he owned the place. Of course, he wasn’t allowed to swim alone, so we all took turns keeping him company and making sure he was safe while still having the time of his life.
His mom and dad joined in a little later—understandably, since they had their hands full with their youngest baby, who was still too little for the water.
As for me, I wandered off a bit and let myself really immerse in the river—figuratively and literally.
The water wasn’t too deep where we were, and I started to wonder why it seemed so shallow, especially compared to the videos I had seen from other bloggers. Eventually, I learned that we weren’t yet in the deeper part of the river. If we had driven in just a bit further, we could have reached the more scenic, deeper areas. Maybe next time, I thought to myself. And hopefully, when that next time comes, my husband will be with me.
I really missed him on this trip. It would have been lovely to explore this place together. There’s just something so special about discovering a new destination for the first time with your partner—especially if you're a little romantic like me (hehehe).
After soaking in the river and enjoying the peaceful, refreshing water, we decided it was best to leave just before sunset, to make the drive back safer and less tiring. But as usual, the sun set faster than we expected.
In true Philippine province fashion, the roads become pitch-dark quickly, with very few street lights. Good thing we weren’t alone—my other niece and her family were ahead of us in another car, so we traveled caravan-style, which felt safer and more reassuring.
Before finally heading home, we dropped off one of my nieces at her house. The rest of us continued on our way, tired but satisfied. And let me tell you—nothing beats a warm bath after a long day of nature, walking, and river water. I had a relaxing bath just before dinner, and it felt like the perfect ending to a surprisingly adventurous day.
And with that, the story comes to a close. Thank you so much for reading until the end—it means the world to me. Your time, attention, and support are what keeps me writing. Until my next adventure story! 💛
