There is something special about the caves next to the ocean. In a previous post, I shared with you the caves of De Kelders. This time around, and I visited a place close to my home that I have been meaning to go to for many years now. My better half forced me to go there and so we did! I got off my lazy couch, i.e., my philosopher job, and we visited the many caves of Dappat se Gat! Literally translated, se Gat means his/her hole or ass or cave. Gat has many translations, depending on how your brain works!
After being in I think 4 or 5 caves, I am still not sure which one is Dappat's cave, but I want to share with you these many caves! I really hope you enjoy this virtual journey with me into the many caves of Dappat se gat.
It's all in the Name
But from the top of the road, you can see how secluded the area is, you cannot see the beach, even less so can you see the caves. The perfect spot to hide away with your stolen goods!
Luckily for us, the spot is relatively safe now and people use it to surf (even though it is very dangerous) and to even propose! and I witnessed one at the moment! We did not get the actual proposal, but we saw the girl taking a photograph of the ring and their picnic on the beach. So, rather than use the beach today for illicit things, people have embraced the natural beauty of the place.
The Many Caves
I did not know this, but there are many caves, more than just one. The name, Dappat se gat, or Dappat's hole/cave, might give the impression that there is only one hole or cave. But to and my surprise, there are many more. We ventured into the first one, which is actually two:
The lighting was perfect inside the cave, so in an upcoming post I will share these photographs.
But I am sure one can have a very nice picnic in this cave. Many before us certainly have done it, the evidence is there (more on this below).
We walked around the corner, to find yet another cave! This one, you needed to climb a bit. There was more water dripping from the top, so more moss and plants were growing there.
From the top inside the cave, you have a splendid view of the beach. It is truly spectacular. It is funny, if I can get a bit philosophical for a moment, how those in the olden times used these places for their illicit behavior, one would not think that they appreciated its beauty. Dappat, we might imagine, lived in a state of constant trepidation and fear of being caught. We can even go so far as to state that he might not have even seen it as a beautiful place! He saw it merely in a utility or pragmatic light; he saw it as the perfect hideout and not a place of natural beauty. Maybe at night, he might have pondered its beauty, we will never know!
The Surrounding Beach and Walk
Because the caves are so secluded and hidden, you need to walk through some thick fynbos plants. Luckily, the route is established now, so you can ponder the beautiful plants and not worry about getting to the cave.
We got stuck at a beautiful stream:
But in the end, it was worth it all!
The Human Element: A Nasty Eyesore
Humans will be humans. The beach, in its pristine beauty, was unfortunately littered with human eyesores. The people surely enjoyed their picnics! But why could they not have thrown it away? There are dustbins. It is such a shame.
What will those in the future think of our current neglect of the beauty of this planet?
Postscriptum, or The Surrounding Beauty, or Sharing Way Too Much
Driving home, we are again dumped in the immense beauty of the surrounding area. The mountains that lay at your feet, feel otherworldly in their beauty. Please enjoy these three videos we took of the mountains whilst driving to Dappat se gat. I am sharing way too much already in this post, but the scenery is just so spectacular; I really want to showcase the beauty of the place where we reside.
In any case, I hope you enjoyed this virtual adventure of a stunning place with me! I really hope that you will someday have the opportunity to come and visit and see it for yourself. With the recent events, the Rand (our currency) has tanked a bit, so it will be cheaper to travel here!
All of the photographs and videos are my own taken with my iPhone or Nikon D300. The musings are also my own unless hyperlinked and stated otherwise.
