Assos is a small town on the coast of Turkey. At one time, Aristotle came here and opened an academy. It's also the place where two Hivians stopped for a night while on a road trip through Turkey.
and I started our day in Foca. We didn't know where we should go next after Foca and someone recommended Assos to us. We were looking for something smaller and coastal and it sounded like Assos fit the bill.
We had breakfast in Foca and drove along the coast to Assos. The drive was less than four hours to get to Assos, so we took our time on the road and enjoyed the trip.
Along the highways in Turkey, there are are many vendors selling various products. Usually the products sold are preserved produce of one sort or another.
Google translates the sign to "Black Delight" and "Black Powder Juice". I wish we had Google Lens back then, it would have been cool to try out some black powder juice.
This vendor was selling sheep statues? You wouldn't think there would be enough people in the market for sheep statues to support a business like this, but they must sell enough to be profitable.
Along the way, we stopped at a great restaurant for lunch. The photo's GPS shows the location as being here. In my hand is a common Turkish drink called Ayran. It's a salty yogurt drink that is a little bit surprising the first time you try it. It takes some getting used to, but I developed a taste for it.
The restaurant was very pretty and the shade in the back yard area was nice and cool. There were also rabbits running around! I've never been to a restaurant with rabbits.
Not only were there rabbits running around, there was also a rooster. It was almost like a little petting zoo in the restaurant.
The restaurant was a great stop on our journey. I don't recall anything about the food so it's a safe bet that it wasn't terrible. Most likely it was awesome!
After a picturesque lunch and a bit of relaxation, we got back on the road and made our way to Assos.
We made it to Assos and found a hotel that we liked. When we checked out the next day, there was some tension as the price demanded at check-out was quite a bit higher than the price that was told to us at check-in. I'm still not sure if it was outright deception, or just something lost in translation. The hotel told us that dinner and breakfast was included in the room's price, but at check-out they said that only some of the dinner was included but the main dishes were added to the price.
We didn't know any of that until we checked out, so our time here seemed like an awesome deal. The hotel had nice rooms and a pool. It was located right across the street from the ocean.
The grounds of the hotel were very pretty and welcoming.
After we dropped off our bags, we still had a few hours to kill before dinner. We went out for a walk to explore the area.
The gravel beach was pretty, but neither nor I are the laying-on-the-beach types. It was nice to look at, but didn't offer much in the way of something to do.
One thing that was cool to see is the Dove Hotel. It's an aptly named hotel. There was a flock of doves flying around it when we walked by.
Other than the beach and the Dove Hotel, there wasn't a whole lot to see in the part of Assos that we stayed in. It's an OK place, but it was my least favorite stop out of all of the places that we stayed in Turkey.
Back at the hotel, the dinner that was served was awesome! And, unknown to us, expensive. We were served all kinds new and tasty foods. The picture above is terrible, but I think it shows watermelon, a kind of bean salad, and probably another kind of salad.
We were also served fried sea animals. I don't really like seafood and this was my least favorite part of the excellent meal. Ironically, it was probably the most expensive part of the meal.
The waiter would come up to the table and say something in Turkish and and I would just shrug and say yes. Then they would bring us a plate.
A common liquor in Turkey is Raki. It tastes like anis or licorice. What's cool about it is that it's clear when it's in the bottle, but it turns white when you pour it on ice.
The meal was great and we both really enjoyed ourselves. I can't remember how expensive the meal actually was. It's very likely that the meal's price was fair, but I was upset because it wasn't the price that we had previously negotiated.
In the morning, the breakfast that was served was incredible. It was included in the price of the room and it knocked my socks off. The table was huge and was filled with all kinds new and interesting Turkish foods. There were also some more familiar dishes. I loved the breakfast at this hotel.
After breakfast, I took a picture of this really cool looking plant. I checked out and settled our bill and left the place with hard feelings. I wish I could remember how much we were told it would cost versus how much it actually cost. I know that I spent a fair amount of time arguing with hotel guy.
I learned a lesson about getting firm prices and paying in advance if possible.
We loaded up the car and got back on the road. The day's trip would be an 8 hour drive so we had a long day of driving ahead of us. I'll write about that tomorrow, but I will include some of the snacks that I picked up on the road.
Here we have some Beef flavored Cheetos.
And here we have some Hot Corn flavored Doritos.
I didn't get very many photos in Assos, but I did get a ton of great photos of our next stop. I hope you'll join me tomorrow for our next stop on our road trip through Turkey.
