On our way from Bled to Croatia, my dad and I stopped in Piran for lunch. It's a beautiful coastal town of medieval architecture, charming narrow streets, and a captivating coastline. While the port is currently used for fishing and leisure activities, it was once a hub for piracy during Roman times.
We parked on the outskirts of town and walked towards the coast through tight little streets and alleyways. The weather was perfect and the feeling of the ancient buildings and streets lead my mind try to imagine life in this area during ancient times.
I've got a special love in my heart for boats. Maybe it's from growing up watching Flipper, or maybe it's from all of the books I've read like the Hornblower series, or the Aubrey & Maturin series. There's just something about boats that brings up wistful feelings of freedom, romance, and danger.
Even ugly old fishing boats appeal to me. It's good that I like boats because we would be spending that night on a boat in Croatia. Luckily we didn't stay on an old fishing boat. More about that in my next post.
My dad and I found a little restaurant by the ocean and had lunch. I had a salad that was good. I'm pretty sure my dad got something with seafood in it. I have a vague memory of tiny octopi, but maybe it wasn't at this restaurant.
We found some creepy statues made by the same person that made the creepy statues in Ljubljana. There was another statue of a guy melting, but I'm not sure if it was from the same sculptor.
We walked along the water for a short while and the clouds began to gather. The weather moved pretty quickly in this area but there wasn't much risk of a storm. I think the camera just makes it look more gloomy than it actually was.
The bright buildings, pretty sea, and multitude of boats made both of us wish we had enough time to stay a full day in Piran. Unfortunately, we had some activities scheduled and had to be in Croatia that night.
I love this picture with the bird, but the day really wasn't as gloomy as the photo feels.
After a few hours in Piran, we headed back to the car and got on the road south. We were on our way to our first night in Croatia! From Piran, Croatia is only a few kilometers away.
I hope you enjoyed this little post. Normally I like to make my posts longer, but we only stopped in Piran for a couple of hours. Stay tuned for the next one as we tour though areas of Croatia that are both famous and off the beaten path.
