After a pandemic, a repatriation flight, the discovery of cancer, and a lot of time, I am back at Hive! Traveling less now, but still on a mission to get on the road, somehow, someway.
Depois de uma pandemia, um voo de repatriação, a descoberta de um câncer e muito tempo, estou de volta ao Hive! Viajando menos agora, mas ainda com essa missão de seguir pela estrada, de algum jeito, de alguma forma.
Until my health is 100% I will continue to do small trips. But, without a doubt, with the same explorer spirit that the world gave me. I want to share here a little of what I have been discovering about Brazil and even about my hometown! By the way, this is very interesting, I have traveled the world to realize that I don't know so many things about my own country! It is crazy how we end up devaluing what we have at home. Maybe we need to go far away to acquire the look of a traveler and be able to look at the place we come from in a different way.
Até que a minha saúde esteja 100% continuarei fazendo pequenas viagens. Mas, sem dúvida, com o mesmo espírito explorador que o mundo me deu. Quero compartilhar por aqui um pouco do que venho descobrindo sobre o Brasil e até sobre a minha cidade natal! Aliás, é bem interessante isso, viajei o mundo para me dar conta de que não conheço tantas coisas do meu próprio país! É muito maluco como acabamos desvalorizando aquilo que temos em casa. Talvez, a gente precise ir para muito longe para adquirir o olhar de viajante e conseguir olhar de uma outra forma o lugar de onde viemos.
Coming back was not easy at all, I must say. So next year I'm getting ready to explore more of Brazil and share it here. In this return post, however, I want to share a little bit of a place that became special to me. Located very close to my hometown, Fazenda Ipanema has a lot of nature, Brazilian history and lets me do one of the things I love the most: hiking!

A national forest
Fazenda Ipanema has more than 5 thousand hectares of native vegetation from two important Brazilian fauna biomes: the Atlantic Forest and the Cerrado. Because it is home to countless species, it is today considered a national forest, that is, an area protected by the environmental authorities. To access Fazenda Ipanema there is a control that is done by employees who charge a fee of R $10.00 per person. Besides this, there are guides in the visitor's area for those who want to take the trails that are closed.
Inside the visitor center you can access all the information about the local fauna and flora, as well as the history.
A Fazenda Ipanema conta com mais de 5 mil hectares de vegetação nativa de dois biomas importantes da fauna brasileira: a mata atlântica e o cerrado. Por abrigar inúmeras espécies ela é hoje considerada uma floresta nacional, isto é, uma área protegida pelas autoridades ambientais. Para acessar a Fazenda Ipanema existe um controle que é feito por funcionários que cobram uma taxa de R $10,00 por pessoa. Além disso, na área do visitante existem guias para quem quer fazer as trilhas que são fechadas. Dentro do centro de visitantes é possível ter acesso a toda informação tanto sobre a fauna e a flora presentes local, bem como, sobre a história.

A little bit of Brazilian history is there
Besides all the abundance of nature, Fazenda Ipanema is also considered to be a historical and archeological site in Brazil. Yes, there are fossils in the region!
The whole region where it is located was discovered around 1589 by a Portuguese explorer named Afonso Sardinha, who found a large amount of iron ore in the area. Soon after the discovery, two Catalan forges were installed for the first attempts to exploit the iron ore.
In 1810 the Real Fábrica de Ferro São João de Ipanema was installed there, which was the first Brazilian ironworks. There they produced grates, gates, machinery, but also many weapons that were used by the Brazilian army in the Paraguay War.
Além de toda abundância de natureza, a Fazenda Ipanema também é considerada um patrimônio histórico e arqueológico do Brasil. Sim, na região existem fósseis!
Toda a região onde ela está localizada foi descoberta em por volta de 1589 por um bandeirante português chamado Afonso Sardinha que encontrou naquela área uma grande quantidade de minério de ferro. Logo depois da descoberta, foram instaladas duas forjas catalãs para as primeiras tentativas de exploração do minério de ferro.
Em 1810 foi instalada ali a Real Fábrica de Ferro São João de Ipanema, que foi a primeira siderúrgica brasileira. Ali se produziam grades, portões, maquinários, mas também muitas armas que foram utilizadas pelo exército brasileiro na Guerra do Paraguai.

Today there are only the ruins of the furnaces and of the factory in the Fazenda, but it is a very beautiful place to visit and also to photograph. Although they are considered ruins, a good part of the structure still remains from the time of the Brazilian Empire.
The Fazenda was also used by important figures in the history of Brazil. First it served as a guesthouse for Dom Pedro II in 1841 and then in 1871 Princess Isabel lived there.
Hoje existem na Fazenda apenas as ruínas dos fornos e também da fábrica, mas é um lugar super bonito para se visitar e também fotografar. Apesar de serem consideradas ruínas, boa parte da estrutura ainda se mantém desde a época do Império Brasileiro.
A Fazenda também foi utilizada por figuras importantes da história do Brasil. Primeiro ela serviu de hospedagem para Dom Pedro II em 1841 e depois em 1871 a princesa Isabel viveu por ali.

Exhibition
Inside the main house, from time to time, some exhibitions are held. I was lucky enough to see one about Spix and Martius, two German naturalists who came to Brazil to catalogue Indians and some of the flora and fauna. They traveled for three years, and one of the places they visited was precisely Fazenda Ipanema. The exhibition showed exactly the stretch from there to the Amazon.
Dentro do casarão principal, de tempos em tempos, acontecem algumas exposições. Tive a sorte de ver uma sobre Spix and Martius, dois naturalistas alemães que vieram para o Brasil para catalogar índios e um pouco da flora e da fauna. Eles viajaram por três anos, e um dos pontos que eles passaram foi justamente a Fazenda Ipanema. A exposição mostrava justamente o trecho feito de lá até a Amazônia.
I found the exhibition incredible, because it portrays this very traveling look at the beauties of Brazil. In addition, it brings the whole collection that was created by the two scholars. They both traveled a good part of the Brazilian journey on foot, drawing species of flora and fauna, as well as Indians. All this with the objective of registering and cataloging everything they found here. It was simply amazing work! Today the collection they have created is not only rich material from a historical point of view, but also from an environmental and anthropological one. Some of the species and Indians described by them do not even exist anymore.
Achei a exposição incrível, porque ela retrata justamente esse olhar viajante sobre as belezas do Brasil. Além disso, ela traz todo acervo que foi criado pelos dois estudiosos. Ambos percorreram boa parte do trajeto brasileiro a pé, desenhando espécies da flora e da fauna, além de índios. Tudo isso com o objetivo de registrar e catalogar tudo o que encontraram por aqui. Um trabalho simplesmente incrível! Hoje o acervo criado por eles não é apenas um material riquíssimo do ponto de vista histórico, como também ambiental e antropológico. Algumas das espécies e índios descritos por eles sequer existem mais.

Trails
Inside the farm there are closed trails, which can only be accessed with guides, but also self-guided trails that can be done either on foot or by bicycle. All of them pass by the Varnhagen Monument erected in memory of the Viscount of Porto Seguro, by engineer Frederico Guilherme de Varnhagen, who managed the steel mill in its heyday.
Dentro da Fazenda existem trilhas fechadas, isto é, que só podem ser acessadas com guias, mas também trilhas autoguiadas que podem ser feitas tanto a pé quanto de bicicleta. Todas elas passam pelo Monumento Varnhagen erguido em memória do Visconde de Porto Seguro, pelo engenheiro Frederico Guilherme de Varnhagen, que administrou a siderúrgica em seu auge.

This monument is located at the top of Araçoiaba Hill and on it is one of the three crosses that were melted down at the Real Fábrica de Ferro. There is also a belvedere with an incredible view!

As we only had one day to enjoy it, we ended up walking the 15 km trail. But it was worth the hike and I will surely come back again!
Como tínhamos somente um dia para aproveitar, acabamos fazendo a trilha de 15 km. Mas valeu muito a pena a caminhada e com certeza voltarei mais vezes!
