The Parque Estadual do Alto da Ribeira, better known as Petar, is considered one of the most exotic ecotourism destinations in Brazil. In addition to a lot of nature and incredible waterfalls, Petar is home to the largest cave mouth in the world. That's right you read: in the world!

The park's total area is 35,712 hectares of preserved Atlantic Forest. Currently, there are about 400 known and catalogued caves in the region, however, only 16 can be visited by tourists. Petar is so large that it is divided into four regions: Núcleo Ouro Grosso, Núcleo Santana, Núcleo Casa de Pedra and Núcleo Caboclos.

I spent four days there and, naturally, it was impossible to visit everything. However, in today's post I will tell you a little bit about this experience, and share some beautiful pictures and landscapes of the place. Passei quatro dias por lá e, naturalmente, foi impossível visitar tudo. Porém, no post de hoje, trago um pouco de como foi essa experiência, além de compartilhar belíssimas fotos e paisagens do local. Já morei e visitei muitos lugares deste mundo, mas confesso que o Petar está entre um dos lugares mais lindos que já estive e vi. Depois me contem nos comentários se vocês não acham o mesmo!
Ouro Grosso Nucleus / Núcleo Ouro Grosso
On the first day of the trip we visited the caves and trails of the Ouro Grosso Nucleus. We started the day with a light trail, called Trilha da Figueira (Fig Tree Trail), that took us to the cave Ouro Grosso.
The fig tree trail has this name precisely because in its middle is a huge fig tree whose gigantic roots serve as decoration for the tourists' photos.
No primeiro dia da viagem visitamos as cavernas e trilhas do Núcleo Ouro Grosso. Iniciamos o dia com uma trilha leve, chamada Trilha da Figueira, que nos levava até a caverna ouro grosso. A trilha da figueira tem esse nome justamente porque no meio dela fica uma figueira enorme cujas raízes gigantescas servem de decoração para as fotos dos turistas.

The cave called ouro grosso (thick gold) takes its name precisely because inside it is possible to find a kind of moss that has a golden glow, very similar to gold. When Petar was discovered, local people thought it was gold, but when they rubbed their fingers against the shiny powder they realized that the gold was gone!
Inside this cave there is a small crystal clear and very cold waterfall. But of course I couldn't help but take a shower!
A caverna ouro grosso leva esse nome justamente porque dentro dela é possível encontrar uma espécie de musgo que tem um brilho dourado, muito parecido com o ouro. Quando o Petar foi descoberto, moradores da região pensaram que se tratava de ouro, porém, ao esfregar os dedos no pó brilhante se davam conta de que esse ouro sumia! Dentro dessa caverna existe uma pequena cachoeira cristalina e muito gelada. Mas é claro que eu não podia deixar de dar um mergulho!!

Next we visited the Alambari cave. Without a doubt, this was a great adventure. In this cave we walked for about one hour with the water up to our necks. I was scared to death, I won't deny it! But after so much adrenaline I was very happy and even got a make-up of the cave!
Na sequência visitamos a caverna do Alambari. Sem dúvida essa foi uma grande aventura. Nessa caverna caminhamos por cerca de uma hora com a água até o pescoço. Eu morri de medo, não vou negar! Mas depois de tanta adrenalina fiquei super feliz e ganhei até uma maquiagem da caverna!

After so much adventure we headed to the Tropeiros Road, where we could observe some more rare vegetation species and learn a little more about the local fauna.
Depois de tanta aventura seguimos para a Estrada dos Tropeiros, onde pudemos observar mais algumas espécies de vegetação rara e aprender um pouco mais sobre a fauna local.

To end the day with more adventure, there was an acqua-ride on the Betari River, which was a lot of fun!
Para terminar o dia com mais aventura rolou um acqua-ride no Rio Betari que foi bem divertido!
Santana Nucleus / Núcleo Santana
On the other days of the trip we visited only the Santana Nucleus. There are so many waterfalls, trails and caves that it took three more days to see everything.
We started the first day with the Santana Cave, one of the most beautiful in Petar. With more than 15 km of galleries, it is a giant cave and the tour lasted more than three hours! There are many galleries to visit, with wonderful stalactites and stalagmites! It is truly a scene from another world!
Nos demais dias de viagem visitamos somente o Núcleo Santana. São tantas cachoeiras, trilhas e cavernas que foram necessários mais três dias para conseguir ver tudo. Começamos o primeiro dia com a Caverna Santana, uma das mais bonitas do Petar. Com mais de 15 km de galerias, ela é uma caverna gigante e o passeio durou mais de três horas! São muitas galerias para visitar, com estalactites e estalagmites maravilhosas! Realmente é um cenário de outro mundo!

After visiting the Santana Cave, we went on to another adventure, this time in the Morro Preto Cave. The entrance of this cave is already a show apart. There is a giant stalactite there, perfect for a picture.
Besides the internal formations, the Morro Preto Cave has a series of fossils and remains of primitive people who lived there. The main hall of this cave is also very tall and gigantic. Really impressive!
Depois de visitar a Caverna Santana, seguimos para mais uma aventura, dessa vez na Caverna Morro Preto. A entrada dessa caverna já é um show à parte. Nela existe uma estalactite gigante perfeita para uma foto. Além das formações internas, a caverna do Morro Preto conta com uma série de fósseis e resquícios de povos primitivos que viveram nela. O salão principal dessa caverna também é altíssimo e gigantesco. Realmente impressionante!

We also enjoyed the Couto Waterfall and the Betari natural pool.
On the last day we visited another part of Santana Nucleus, this time the Betari trail. There we could see the hummingbird waterfall and the swallow waterfall, which are the biggest in this nucleus.
Também aproveitamos a Cachoeira do Couto e a piscina natural do Betari. No último dia visitamos mais uma parte do Núcleo Santana, dessa vez a trilha do Betari. Lá pudemos conferir a cachoeira beija-flor e a cachoeira das andorinhas que são as maiores desse núcleo.

To finish the trip, we went to the Rosa dos Ventos lookout with an incredible view!
This was one of the best trips of my life, with lots of adventure, nature and everything you need to recharge your batteries!
