** NEW YORK CAFE**
After checking into our hotel in Blaha Center, we relaxed, bathed, and found some vegetarian restaurants. We discovered the crowded NEW YORK CAFE during our evening walk. It was close to our hotel. We planned to visit The next day before catching the sightseeing bus. The following day, we arrived at the cafe for coffee (even our hotel was serving breakfast). The crowd was there as usual. when we got in, I placed my order for a 24-carat gold cappuccino and went around to see the beautiful interior. Took some photos, I was very interested to know about the history of this cafe but instead of answering my questions a lady steward gave me a paper about it.
Full view of the building in the evening.
I took these photos when we came across this cafe during our evening walk on the first day.
El-Ashmodai the devilish figure holding an old-style lantern, There are 16 such figures all around the building.
The cafe is located on the ground floor of Hotel ANANTARA, New York Palace
What is now the New York Cafe was built as an office building for the Hungarian branch of the New York Insurance Company with a grandiose culturally oriented cafe on the ground floor and offices in the upper three. The cafe opened on October 23, 1894. It was designed with a majestic Italian-style interior, using marble, bronze, silk, and velvet.
The cafe gained in reputation after the Harsonyi brothers took over management. In the 20th century, it became a literary cafe where writers, artists, and journalists gathered. The cafe's tables became a gathering place for artists.
The First World War ended the cafe's golden era, and new management took over. During the 1930 European economic crisis, the New York Cafe closed its doors and was turned into a warehouse. In 1954, it reopened under the name Hungaria, although not as a cafe, but almost in its original splendor.
In 2001, the Italian Boscolo group reconstructed the legendary building. Finally, the new owner started New York Cafe at the beginning of 2006, in conjunction with the New York Palace Hotel on the upper floors. Now, Hungarians are very proud of this cafe, as there is only one New York cafe in the world, located in Budapest, which attracts thousands of tourists each year and is widely known as the world's best cafe.
At the entrance, we can feel the beautiful architecture and witness the history.
