While in Rome these last few days we visited the Capitoline Hill, which is right in the centre of Rome.
Post warning: A few of the statues in the pics lower down have got their naughty bits uncovered !!! Read on at your own peril !!
One of the most striking buildings in Rome is located there - the Altare della Patria. Its quite controversial and some also refer to it as the wedding cake !
It is an impressive structure, and I love the fountains right down at ground level at the front.
Its the Victor Emmanuelle II monument, who was the first king of a unified Italy. Its construction started around 1885 and continued into 1935.
There is also an impressive church up on the hill (brown building in the centre) and then a large square with some impressive statues (far right in the pic above).
We took the steps up, and it was worth it - the church and square are really pretty.
There are lovely views across Rome from the steps.
And these two guardian statues above are quite amazing - they are just huge !
Thats a side view of the same statues from the church - they are massive !
You can also see the famous statue of Romulus and Remus (the founders of Rome) suckling from the she wolf that brought them up, on the hill.
And above is a cool bronze of one of the ceasars on horseback right in the center of the square.
The Capitoline museum is also up on the square, but we didnt have time to go in.
The statues there are really quite awesome !
It was quite a nice place to explore, and the church at the top is also really pretty, although I didnt take any pictures inside out of respect.
The church is the brown building in the pic above, pretty plain from the outside, but incredible on the inside - full of ornate marble with beautiful statues and windows.
Its really one of those places that you have to visit when in Rome, and we really enjoyed it !!!
