We were in Rome just a few weeks back, and one thing that always sticks out for me is the fountains - they are incredible and everywhere !
Rome does get called the city of fountains and has over 300 city feature fountains spread around the city.
The Trevi fountain (above 2 pics) is probably the most famous - and you can see why ! Construction started in 1732 and was completed in 1762 - 30 years to build a fountain - but it is the ultimate number 1 if you ask me ! And unsurprisingly its always crowded. A ton of money gets chucked in it daily for good luck, and they have to switch it off regularly just to go in and scoop it all up, or it would get clogged !
The one above is one of two either side of the Altare della Patria just at the Capitoline Hill.
Above is another of my favs, its in the Piazza della Rotonda, just outside the Pantheon. I love the shot above - the fountain, the Pantheon and the pigeon !!!
Wherever you go, you come across them. I cant even remember where the one above was, but we just stumbled upon it !
Above was another random one we found, but not running unfortunately. The guy looks pretty sad !
The one above was another random one up a side street - I really like this one too !
The Piazza Navona has three crackers. The one above is in the middle. And interestingly the piazza Navona is built on the site of the Roman Stadium of Domitian, an old arena for games - hence the shape of the piazza (check it out on google - you'll see what I mean).
And then the one above, the fontana del moro is at one end of the piazza.
Above is the Fontana del Nettuno from the other end !
The one above is one of two identical fountains outside of the Vatican - this one is called Fontana del Maderno, and the other one is called Fontana del Bernini.
The one above is the same one outside the Pantheon again - this fellows face come out quite dramatically at night !
The picture above does not do this one justice. Its up on the palatine hill in amongst the old palace ruins. Its quite incredible, as its like a living fountain with the water dripping down over the plants, with the pool at the bottom full of goldfish. This in turn flows to another chamber below which is quite eerie, but my pics of that didnt come out at all.
The one above is called Fontana delle Naiadi and is just outside Rome Termini train station. Our tour bus guide told us it caused uproar when it was first built around 100 years ago because of the scantly clad ladies that adorn it ! It was considered either obscene or erotic - it depended on who was viewing it !
And above is Fontana della Dea di Roma which is in the Piazza del Popolo.
And above is the Fontana Del Tritone, dating from the 17th Century.
And above is the 'gravy boat' at the bottom of the Spanish Steps !
I do love a good fountain, and Rome is the place to go if you want to see the best ! You wont be disappointed !
