When you think of Cebu, and rich marine and beautiful diving site, the first thing that pops out my mind is none other than, Moalboal. Moalboal is a municipality in the south of Cebu and it is globally known for its rich marine life and beautiful beaches. It is where you can do water activities such as snorkeling, island hopping, scuba diving, and my favorite, free diving. I have been to Moalboal ample times and I am always thrilled to go back.
After a few practices at Club Kontiki in Lapu-Lapu City, my friends and I took advantage of a long weekend to dive at Moalboal
How To Get There?
From Cebu City, you can go to Cebu South Bus Terminal and ride a bus straight to Moalboal. The bus route that you will be taking is "Bato via Barili" and you can just inform the conductor and/or driver to drop you off at Moalboal Tourism.
Upon arrival, you need to go to Moalboal Tourism Office to secure permits to visit either Basdiot or Basdaku (I will share more details about these two later on). You will also need to pay a minimal environmental fee while getting the permits. Oh, I almost forgot! You need to secure a booking confirmation of your accommodation in Moalboal if you are spending overnight. That's it!
Once you secured your permits, you can hail a tricycle to your destination. Of course, if you have a private vehicle to your destination, you don't have to commute. LOL
Basdaku vs Basdiot
Basdaku Beach
As stated above, there are 2 main barangays that offer tourist attractions. Should you want powdery white sand and just chill for your weekend, Basdaku is the place to go. You can rent a cottage, or rooms and just enjoy the serenity of the beach.
Basdiot
However, should you like an adventurous type of weekend where you get to enjoy amazing and rich marine life, Basdiot is the choice. This is where you can find the famous sardine run, sea turtles, and amazing corals. Most foreign tourists also go here because of these activities.
In this blog, I will be taking you to Basdiot since this time, we are freediving! Are you excited? Cause I am LOL!
Freediving Spots
In Basdiot Moalboal, dive spots are everywhere. You can just dive like few meters from the shore since it's a sea cliff. My college classmate who is currently based in Moalboal joined us for the dive, and a good thing, she know a tour guide that could assist us.
The Mermaid Statue
Just at the edge of Basdiot is a Mermaid Statue submerged underwater. It is found I think around 5 meters deep which is okay for beginners. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how that status ended up there but it is perfect for awra poses.
The Bench
A few meters from the Mermaid Statue is a small bench where you can sit and awra . It's just as deep as the Mermaid Status so beginners can enjoy it.
Along these spots is the underwater cliff where you can find beautiful corals. You can also find sea turtles just chillin' like a villain. LOL
Sardine Run
Since the spots are just lined up, we opted to swim from spot to spot and didn't go to the shore to walk. We then went to the most famous spot in Moalboal, which is the amazing Sardine Run. If it's your first time to be in Moalboal, please DO NOT miss this!!!
It has been on my bucket list to have myself pictured of the amazing forms of the sardine. Now I know how to free dive, I can finally achieve it! Good thing the guide is very good at taking underwater photos using my GoPro Hero 10 and he was able to capture it's a wonder.
What does it feel like to chase sardines?
To me, it's breathtaking, and invigorating. It's a one-of-a-kind experience trying to hold your breath and focuses so you can dive further but you are amused by its number. I couldn't count them but I think they are millions of sardine swimming under the waters. It made me super enthralled! I just can't stop diving.
But of course, we have our limit so after a few dives and trying to recover my breath, we stopped and ended our dive.
There is still one more spot which is the Turtle's point. We didn't go there anymore since we already saw the turtle previously and that point tends to get crowded with tourists.
I will get tired of going back to Moalboal. IF ONLY it is just a 30-minute commute and the expenses it is cheap, I will go back every weekend! But it's not, so maybe next long weekend perhaps?
