Hello friends!
Here I am, as promised, to share with you one of my most extraordinary experiences of this summer. I was staying in Marina di Bibbona, a wonderful seaside resort in the province of Livorno, but my walk turned into the stage for an adventure I will never forget. Initially, I had planned to visit Bibbona, but destiny had an incredible surprise in store for me, one of those chance discoveries that leave you breathless: the Yellow Caves of Bibbona.
When I took the first photos to share with you, I realized just how unique these caves were. If you've read my previous stories, you may remember that a few months ago, I shared my experience in the caves of Sardinia, which were completely different from these. This contrast motivated me to create this post and tell you about this extraordinary discovery that left me speechless.
This complex of caves has a fascinating history. It was formed over millennia by the relentless action of water on limestone. You should know that this area is rich in yellow limestone, which explains the distinctive color of the caves. It's believed that a million years ago, this land was largely submerged by the sea, much like many parts of Italy. Nature sculpted these caves in an impressive way, giving rise to a unique spectacle. But then we'll see how humans used them.
As I explored the caves, I had the honor of befriending an elderly gentleman who shared with me the history of this place. He explained that the caves were used by the Etruscans around the 5th century BC as tombs. Many of the archaeological discoveries made here, including cinerary urns, have been transferred to Tuscan museums. But what really surprised me were the markings and graffiti in the caves. They don't belong solely to the Etruscan era but also to medieval times when the caves served as shelters and hideouts for those seeking protection.
This discovery made me reflect on how many cultures and civilizations have passed through this place over the millennia, leaving their mark. Yet, it's sad to note that these caves don't receive the attention they deserve; they're not highly valued, almost hidden. If it hadn't been for chance and the enthusiasm of the people I saw coming from that place, I might never have discovered this hidden wonder. That's why I felt the need to share this story with you. Who knows, maybe someone else will find it equally fascinating.
I found out that there is an association dedicated to promoting this area through guided tours. I was fortunate to meet the gentleman who told me this story; otherwise, I would have left these caves without fully understanding their history and significance. Unfortunately, I'm quite ignorant. I'm not an archaeology expert, but I believe that knowing and preserving these stories and places is essential for our culture and history.
The emotion of walking in places that have seen so many cultures pass through over thousands of years, each leaving their mark, is indescribable. I hope this story and the photos I've shared have struck and inspired you, as they did with me. I really wanted to create something special to share with you, and I'm eager to share more adventures with you. See you soon, friends!
