Greetings, fellow travelers! I recently returned from a splendid seven-day journey to Kardamena, a picturesque town on the island of Kos, Greece. I am happy to share with you the delightful experiences and captivating features of this beautiful destination.
Prepare to be transported to a place where crystal-clear waters, charming streets, and cultural richness combine to create a memorable vacation.
Exploring Kardamena's Charms
Kardamena, though unassuming, is a town brimming with tourist shops and an array of restaurants offering delightful breakfasts, lunches, and dinners.
Its streets, characterized by a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere, wind their way through tradition and modernity. Along the narrow cobbled lanes, one can admire buildings with white and blue hues, typical of Greek island architecture.
Typical taverns and bustling cafes offer delicious dishes from the local cuisine, inviting visitors to savor specialties such as souvlaki, moussaka, tzatziki and pitas.
Remarkably, dining expenses remained modest, and we savored delectable dishes that consistently left us satiated.
We also discovered numerous charming bars, perfect for unwinding with a narghile (hookah) while enjoying the evening breeze and ambient music.
Kardamena is known for its lively nightlife scene. The town comes alive after dark, offering a myriad of entertainment options for night owls.
As for unique activities, we went on a fascinating adventure known as the "doctor fish" foot massage, where one immerses their feet in a tank filled with small fish that purify the skin, an amusing and refreshing experience.
Pirate's cruise to hidden beaches and wild islands
We also embarked on a boat excursion, which included visits to three stunning Kos beaches, with a highlight being a visit to a picturesque islet adorned with a charming church and offering breathtaking panoramic views.
During our boat excursion, we spent a blissful afternoon lounging on the deck, soaking up the sun, and taking refreshing dives into the crystal-clear waters. The highlight of the excursion was a sumptuous barbecue lunch featuring succulent pork skewers and fresh salad. All of this was enjoyed to the backdrop of diverse and melodic music, making it a truly memorable experience.
Fun Fact: The islet we visited during our boat excursion is known as "Kastri." It's a tiny gem in the Aegean Sea and is famous for its stunning white-washed church, Agios Nikolaos, perched atop a rocky hill. The views from this islet are simply awe-inspiring.
Wild nature in the streets
One of Kardamena's endearing characteristics is its abundance of feline residents. Cats roam the streets and are cared for by the locals, who take turns providing them with food. For a cat enthusiast like myself, this was truly a paradise.
Additionally, we encountered curious creatures akin to bearded dragons while strolling to a local bar.
The island's vibrant flora, including a banana plant in full bloom, added to the enchantment.
Stunning moonrise everyday
Evenings were a spectacle in themselves. The moon would rise long after sunset, allowing us to witness the moon's red ascent. Lying on the sandy shore, we marveled at the moonlight's reflections on the tranquil sea—a spectacle not to be missed.
Culinary Delights
Greek cuisine is a delectable fusion of Mediterranean flavors. During our stay in Kardamena, we had the pleasure of dining at several exceptional restaurants. Here are our top three favorites, each offering not only exquisite food but also a unique dining ambiance:
Thomas Grill & Mese by Skala: This restaurant served the most exceptional "feta filo" we encountered on the island. The combination of feta cheese enveloped in crispy filo pastry and drizzled with honey was nothing short of a taste sensation. The warm and welcoming atmosphere, with attentive staff, made dining here a true pleasure.
Sunbeam: For an unforgettable dinner with live music by the sea, Sunbeam was a standout. The cuisine was top-notch, featuring a variety of Greek specialties. The gentle sea breeze, the sound of waves, and the live music added to the enchanting ambiance.
Avli Traditional: While not directly by the sea, Avli Traditional offers an authentic Greek dining experience that is well worth the visit. The cozy and rustic setting, combined with friendly service, made it a memorable evening. The traditional Greek dishes, prepared with care and expertise, left a lasting impression.
Beautiful things don't last long
As our vacation came to a close, we indulged in a relaxing massage at the spa near our hotel, a first-time experience that left us rejuvenated and ready for the journey home.
We tried to spend as much time as possible among beaches, the sea, and other places to make the most of the remaining few days of this extraordinary vacation.
On the day of departure, we packed our bags, took one last dip in the sea, and then headed to the airport via taxi with a small tear welling up on the face.
My visit to Kos, and specifically to the charming town of Kardamena, left an indelible mark. If given the opportunity in the future, I will undoubtedly return for another vacation filled with relaxation and discovery in this enchanting corner of the world.
