Our second big stop in the USA was Monument Valley, located in the Navajo Nation on the Utah/Arizona border. Ryan has wanted to photograph sunset at this location from the moment we started planning our travels years ago. And sunset did not disappoint! We spent a full day here and stayed the night just outside the park in a free camp.
Monument Valley has a 27km (17miles) unpaved driving loop that offers spectacular views of the sandstone monuments that give the valley its name. These monuments can be between 121m (400ft) and 305m (1000ft) tall. The road on this trail can be a bit rough, and only a certain amount of cars are allowed on the road at any one time (this number has halved now due to current covid restrictions).
Throughout the park there are numerous Navajo vendors selling their artworks and food. We came in the off-season so unfortunately, many of them weren't operating.
Also, if you've ever seen the movie Forest Gump you will know that this is the location where he finished his run. We didn't realise this, but I also haven't seen the movie in many years.
The photos in this post were taken from our free camp just outside the park. The park itself does not offer any camping and closes to the general public at night. But as you can see you can still take some beautiful photos outside the park, and the location is perfect for astro photography as well.
Looking at the photos it's no wonder Monument Valley is one of the most photographed locations on the planet, and while I think my photos are nice, they will be nothing compared to the photos Ryan will produce... if he ever gets around to editing them haha!
