A walk around Filopappou Hill, Athens, Greece.
Hello friends. :)
Welcome to Filopappou Hill in Athens, Greece.
This beautiful hill is located in the heart of the city and offers stunning views of the Acropolis and the surrounding area. It's the perfect spot for a romantic walk or a peaceful picnic. So come on over and explore this charming spot in Athens!
If you're looking for one of the best views of Athens, then Filopappou Hill is the place to go. It's located just to the east of the Acropolis and offers stunning views of the city and the Parthenon. It's a great place to go for a walk
The hill was once known as "Hill of the Muses" because of the number of muses that were said to have resided there.
The hill has a lot of attractions to go check out, and well... I think you should go see them too. However, if you are looking to walk around and get some fresh air, hike up and down, and feel like you are in nature, then you will want to go here.
Myself, I was looking for a place to sit and play the Uke for a little while, so I headed up the hill for a seat and an adventure. Summary, I got harassed by the local guards, met a few people, got 20k of steps in and enjoyed a great afternoon.
So, let's go and hike up this mound of wounder, this hill of things, this little rise of history with a jungle twist. :)

Living in a big city often means that you have to walk through it to get to the park. Manhattan is a great example of this - the borough has several large parks, but getting to them typically means dodging traffic and busy sidewalks. The same in Athens, Greece... but the streets are more... quaint.
When it comes to playing music, I am a bit picky. You see, my skills on the UKE are not the best, they are not the worst, but they are also not so good... Hahaha… I tend to look for places that are off the path a littl, where I can sit and enjoy. So, that is what I looked for and, after some time on Filopappou Hill, I found a place to sit next to the Diateichisma Wall, with a great view.
I played for a good 30 minutes. People watched, enjoying it, until a guard came over to me. They told me to stop, or they would have the police come. At first, I was shocked... here was, for the most part, just in the woods, perhaps 4 people around... on a rock. Not one for getting into a beef in Greece with an old guard who is fluffing up, I said okay and moved on. :/
Anyway, glad I did... I saw a lot more… Like this, the Old Observatory. WOW. History that is modern! I have to wonder if it is still used or, not anymore...
At first, I was bummed, as I had a great view, chilling with my uke, enjoying life. All that laid in front were rocks like this... but over the rise...
And I got to experience the sunsetting in the distance, just down the hill a little from the Old Observatory. So many great places to look and see out, across the world, to the distant Sea.
Wandering around, there are many unique buildings that sorta just... pop up from the trees. Perhaps they are natural grown, they are man - made... who knows...
Around a bend, I walked on to the Church of Saint Marina at Thiseio. The building stood out at me against the sky. I had to take a phew photos of it.
The clay titles of the roof with crosses on the sky, it felt unworldly, like almost a living creature rising up.
HAHAHA, I did get a bit "artistic" with some photos, like this one of the cross taken through that of barbed wire. Any metaphors?
The Church of Saint Marina at Thiseio was a nice stop, Even though it was a bit outside the park, it was nice to stumble upon.
Walking around the front of the church, the feeling of it being rain drops, or water raining down, perhaps a waterfall. I wonder if that was the plan of the designer.
In the air I heard people singing. This was interesting, and I followed my ears to the other side of the park. Here there was a gathering of people. It turns out they were working on some protest songs for March 5th, and a Woman's rights march that was coming up.
I also met 2 people here who told me about the raily and some Greek things.
Walking back on the paths, I walked past 2 other walkers, they stopped me. They had been in the area I was in when the guard told me to leave. Expressing their frustration at the guards here, we joked and talked for a bit. This was nice... to know that they enjoyed the music I was playing, and they remembered me, and told me this. WOW!
After some time, I found my way to a gate and a path out of the park. Wow, such a pleasant afternoon.
In conclusion, Filopappou Hill is a beautiful and serene spot in Athens that offers stunning views of the cityscape and Acropolis. It's perfect for a peaceful stroll or a relaxing picnic with friends. Make sure to visit this hill during your stay in Athens!
