Hello everyone, after a sunny and warm weekend, very cold weather has arrived in my country, but I am happy that I spent Saturday with my family in nature, on the Fruska Gora mountain in Serbia. In addition to the amazing nature and beautiful picnic spots, Fruska gora is known for the monasteries that are located there and testify to the past of that area.
Fruska gora is therefore considered a holy mountain. When you walk along its paths between green expanses and vineyards, those are moments worth experiencing. And it is very possible that when you start one of those paths, it will lead you to one of the many Orthodox monasteries in this area. It is most beautiful during early autumn when the leaves start to fall and everything is more romantic than usual.
Grgeteg Monastery is one of the monasteries we didn't plan to visit that day, but when we saw that we were near it, we headed there, for the first time.
The monastery is reached by a long path through a well-kept courtyard.
The surroundings are very inspiring.
In the yard, we saw a fountain that was built in honor of the nun who lived in this monastery.
When we arrived, there was an organized visit of children from a school. There were a lot of them and it was very noisy.
It is a women's monastery and they say that prayers are read there continuously. When we approached the entrance, it looked like we were entering a castle.
The door leads through the hall to the church and the monastery quarters.
But first you come to the imposing mosaic icon under the vines where visitors usually like to take photos.
The monastery dates back to the 15th century, but the original stone church was demolished and a new church was built on its foundations. It was renovated several times. Even now, the renovation is in progress.
We walked around a bit. We saw a large room where nuns store firewood.
My son was curious to peek inside.
And then we entered the church.
It is imposing inside.
There is an icon of the Mother of God, which is believed to have answered many people's prayers for having children.
We stayed inside for a while and then went out to enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings a little more.
The road continued to lead us to other monasteries, which I will write about in my next posts.
Thank you very much for reading.
The images and writing are original and mine.
Greetings!
Jelena
