Back in the "Lung of the World" - Visiting Pozo Azul this year [Esp-Eng]

Since my husband’s family lives in Puerto Ayacucho, in the state of Amazonas, we plan to visit them at least once a year. We can go any time of year, as long as our plans allow it. In this case, we were able to go last month, in April, and I can tell you that every year is completely different—whether because there are new things to see or simply because of the weather or the time of year.

Generally, it gets very hot in the country during March and April, so we were prepared for the heat to be intense by then, and summer, of course, would have been in full swing. Indeed, when it’s summer, the rivers recede, and as they do, not only do you have to search harder to find a spot where the water reaches at least a little high on your body, but the places also look a bit desolate and dry.

But since our main goal is to visit family, and visiting tourist areas comes second, the truth is that we don’t aim to travel when the places are at their most beautiful. And yet, something that surprises me is that, no matter the season, all these places have a certain beauty depending on when you go. This year we revisited Pozo Azul, a well I’ve told you about before, but this time you’ll see what Pozo Azul looks like in April.

Como la familia de mi esposo vive en Puerto Ayacucho, estado Amazonas, entonces tenemos el plan de al menos ir una vez cada año a visitarlos. Podemos hacerlo en cualquier temporada siempre y cuando, pues, se nos den nuestros planes. En este caso pudimos ir el mes pasado, en abril, y solo puedo contarles que cada año es totalmente diferente, ya sea porque hay nuevas cosas o simplemente por el clima o la temporada del año.

Por lo general, en el país hace mucho calor en los meses de marzo y de abril, así que estábamos mentalizados de que para esas fechas el calor estaría súper fuerte y el verano, por supuesto, habría hecho de las suyas. Efectivamente, cuando es verano los ríos bajan y, al bajar, pues no solo tienes que buscar más para llegar a un sitio donde el agua te llegue al menos un poco alto en el cuerpo, sino que también los lugares se ven un poco desolados y secos.

Pero como nuestro objetivo es principalmente visitar a la familia, y visitar las zonas turísticas queda en un segundo lugar, la verdad es que nuestro objetivo no es viajar cuando los lugares estén más bonitos. Y, aun así, algo que me sorprende es que, sin importar la temporada, todos estos sitios tienen algo de belleza según las fechas en las que vas. Este año volvimos a visitar Pozo Azul, un pozo del que ya les he hablado anteriormente, pero esta vez conocerán cómo se ve Pozo Azul en abril.

This time we were able to go with some friends who live near us. It was their first time in Amazonas, so it was a really enjoyable and fun experience. Pozo Azul was the first place we visited when we arrived, and honestly, it was a totally unexpected plan because we just couldn’t stand the heat anymore and decided one day, out of the blue, to head to the river. It was super cool and refreshing.

The river was low, though. At its deepest point, the water came up to my waist, so we had to spend most of the time lying down or sitting on the sand to be fully submerged. But that didn’t matter; the truth is we had a pretty relaxing day and did various activities like playing ball in the water or even eating in it, safe in the knowledge that the water wouldn’t get our food wet.

The truth is that on this short trip, there were several of us—about 20 people—and we stayed there until late afternoon. The water, as always—since it’s very characteristic of Pozo Azul—looked very clear, and there were lots of little fish that we could watch quietly if we stayed completely still in one spot. There were areas where the sun was shining and others where there was plenty of shade thanks to the trees, and, obviously, since we went to cool off, we stayed in the shade.

Esta vez pudimos ir acompañados de unos amigos que viven cerca de donde nosotros vivimos. Era la primera vez que conocían Amazonas, así que fue una experiencia bastante agradable y divertida. Pozo Azul fue el primer sitio que visitamos cuando llegamos y, honestamente, fue un plan súper inesperado porque simplemente no aguantábamos el calor y decidimos un día, de la nada, irnos al río. Estuvo súper genial además de refrescante.

El río estaba bajo, eso sí. En su parte más profunda el agua me llegaba a la cintura, así que tuvimos que pasar el rato prácticamente acostados o sentados en la arena para poder quedar totalmente cubiertos por el agua. Por eso no importa, la verdad es que tuvimos un día bastante relajante e hicimos varias actividades como jugar pelota en el agua o, incluso, comer dentro de ella con la tranquilidad de que esta no nos mojara la comida.

La verdad es que en este viaje corto fuimos varias personas, unas 20 más o menos, y estuvimos ahí hasta finalizar la tarde. El agua como siempre, ya que es muy característico de Pozo Azul, se veía muy clarita y había un montón de pececitos que podíamos observar tranquilamente si nos quedábamos totalmente quietos en un mismo sitio. Había zonas en las que daba el sol y otras en las que había bastante sombra debido a los árboles y, obviamente, como fuimos a refrescarnos, nos poníamos debajo de la sombra.

Pozo Azul is a very family-friendly spot, so families with children tend to go there because the water isn’t very deep. However, we try to visit places mostly on days when people don’t usually go, such as weekdays. We do this so there aren’t too many people around when we go, because sometimes that’s the best way to enjoy certain places. In this case, we went on a Thursday, and honestly, almost no one else was there that day.

This trip to the river was exactly what we needed because it helped us beat the heat—there was a severe heat wave in the area at that time. But beyond that, it allowed us to spend a pleasant time surrounded by nature, which is always a welcome change. Personally, it made me so happy that my friends, who were visiting Amazonas for the first time, had such a great time and said that Pozo Azul is one of the most beautiful places they’ve ever seen.

Pozo Azul es un lugar muy familiar, así que a este sitio, debido a que las aguas no son tan profundas, van las familias con sus niños. Solo que nosotros tratamos de ir a los sitios, más que nada, en días en los que la gente no suele ir, por ejemplo, días de semana. Esto con el fin de que no haya demasiada gente en los lugares cuando vayamos, porque para poder disfrutar de algunos sitios a veces así es mejor. En este caso fuimos un jueves y la verdad casi nadie fue ese día.

Esta visita al río fue demasiado necesaria porque nos ayudó a combatir el calor, ya que había una ola de calor fuerte en la zona para esas fechas. Pero más allá de eso, nos hizo pasar un rato agradable rodeado de naturaleza, que siempre viene bastante bien. A mí, en lo personal, me hizo demasiado feliz que mis amigos, que estaban conociendo por primera vez Amazonas, lo pasaran tan bien y dijeran que Pozo Azul es uno de los lugares más bonitos que han conocido.
