Getting to Malapascua Island
Maya is the main port of entry and exit to the island, making it the first stop on your way to Malapascua. You can get there from Cebu City by bus, van, or private car. For me, getting to Malapascua was part of the adventure itself. We took a 4-hour van ride from Cebu City to Maya Port, and I enjoyed the views of other places we passed by. From Maya Port, we hopped onto a boat for a short ride to the island. The boat ride, which costs around PHP 100-150 per person, felt like the perfect transition into paradise.
Hotels and Inns
The journey was worth it! As we reached the Port of Malapascua, we saw the beauty and serenity of the island. After that, we directly found a place to stay and booked Chiefs Villa, where we stayed for three days. The room was nice, with a big area, and it felt like we were at our own home. After three days there, we transferred to another place to stay at Mar and Em's Bamboo Cottage and Manduras Inn. All of them were affordable, and there are many hotels and inns to choose from when you visit the island.
Foods
Malapascua offers a taste of authentic Filipino island life. You can savor freshly caught seafood dishes such as grilled fish, kinilaw(Filipino ceviche), shrimp cooked in coconut milk, served at beachfront eateries, and even meats. Don’t forget to try sutukil (sugba, tuwa, kilaw)—a traditional Cebuano seafood feast. Food costs around PHP 150-300 per meal, perfect for its delicious offerings. Aside from seafood, they also serve pizza, burgers, and more.
Main Attractions
One of the highlights of our trip was witnessing the majestic thresher sharks during a dive at Monad Shoal. It was my first time seeing these graceful creatures up close, and the experience was absolutely thrilling. For those who don’t dive, the island offers other equally stunning attractions. We spent hours relaxing on Bounty Beach, where the soft sand and crystal-clear waters were perfect for unwinding. Another favorite memory was exploring a rocky outcrop with an underwater tunnel, which felt like an adventure straight out of a movie. Dive operators on the island are professional and helpful, making it easy for both beginners and experienced divers to enjoy underwater adventures. If you’re visiting, I recommend bringing essentials like sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable footwear for island-hopping tours.
