The Roman Historical Carnival is always in August in Szombathely, Hungary.
It will be held again this year.
Szombathely, the city where I was born.
I would like to invite you to this wonderful cultural event.
In August 2000, on the occasion of the millennium anniversary of the founding of the state, the city of Szombathely again decided to revive the tradition and hold the Roman carnival again after 20 years.
About 100-120 thousand people take part in the event every year.
In this case, all the accommodation in the city is booked, and tourists from the surrounding countries also come here.
The carnival is very spectacular.

During these 4 days, all the inhabitants of the city travel in Roman clothes.

The popular carnival offers the world, folk, and light music concerts as well as engaging and entertaining children’s programs, theater performances, artist and acrobatic productions, and gastronomic events.
The event is a real family program, all ages will find entertainment that suits their interests.
The most visited event of the Carnival is the torchlight, costumed parade on Friday and Saturday evenings, during which nearly 1,000 citizens dressed in age-old costumes march through the streets of the city center.
In this case, the city center is completely closed, the prestigious event can only be reached on foot.
The evening parade will be opened by the mayor of the city, who will arrive at the city’s main square with a Roman tooth, in a toga, and a wreath of myrtle on his head.

The carnival takes place in several places.
It’s like a time travel to the old days.
The Historical Theme Park (Franciscan Garden) is the center of historical programs, where the largest meeting of Central European military traditions is held.
Here tourists and visitors can get to know the battles of the legionnaires and gladiators of the Roman era, the Hungarian way of life during the conquest, the finest dishes of equestrian archery, the medieval knight virtue, or the age of the Turkish wars.

The Forum Stage is the second most visited place, here you can see music productions on the big stage, famous domestic and international tenure bands and singers give concerts every day of the weekend.
The audience can admire fiery and artist, spectacular productions.
in the Main Square of the city, visitors can choose from the porticoes of craftsmen and gastronomic specialties.

Another most visited and popular place in Wine Street. Here you can taste the wines of the most famous wine regions of Hungary.
Beer lovers can also enjoy the best domestic craft beers and beer specialties at Beer Square.

You should know that a city already existed in Roman times.
The location of the district, next to the main trade route through the province of Pannonia, the Amber Road, encouraged the Romans to set up a place to change horses and carriages here, and then a city.
In 43, Emperor Claudius elevated him to the rank of Colonia as Colonia Claudia Savariensum (Claudius Savaria).
In 456, it culminated in an earthquake that destroyed the city.
This is how the Roman buildings got underground. Archaeologists were constantly digging and researching, finding a lot of old building remains, stone and bone tools.
Interestingly, when the bank was built on the city’s main square, building remains were also found here and in various parts of the city.
And the bank was built so that the remains of Roman columns and other buildings can be seen under the glass floor.
Remains of the Amber Road were found in the Ruin Garden.
Wonderful columns were found, restored, and rebuilt.
It's like an amphitheater.
In summer, concerts and opera performances are held here.
I hope you enjoyed the carnival atmosphere with me!
Next time we meet in a new interesting place!
