Hiking 石谷山 during Golden Week, when the weather is warm and clear, offers a quintessential Japanese spring experience. The mountain is currently experiencing its peak season for visitors, as noted by the high volume of hikers, including families and school groups, on the trails during this period.
The Trail: The hike is considered easy to moderate, making it accessible for most fitness levels. The trail from the びく石ふれあい広場 (Bikuishi Fureai Hiroba) is a favorite, starting with a pleasant walk along a stream past the imposing 波切不動明王 (Namikiri Fudo Myoo) rock formation. The path then transitions into a forested mountain trail, passing through bamboo groves and areas with interesting rock formations.
The Summit & Views: The summit area is famous for its large conglomerate rock formations, the most notable being the びく石 itself, named for its resemblance to a "biku," a bamboo basket used in tea picking. While the immediate summit is wooded, the nearby 石谷山展望台 (Ishidaniyama Viewpoint) offers a spectacular 360-degree panorama, if your lucky. On the day we went we were rewarded with sweeping views of Mount Fuji, the Suruga Bay, and the Izu Peninsula. Benches, toilets and a water source are available at the viewpoint, making it a perfect spot for a rest and a packed lunch.
Flora: A major draw in late April and early May is the クマガイソウ (Cypripedium japonicum), or Japanese lady's slipper orchid. While its bloom is fleeting and can be over by the end of Golden Week, the chance to see these delicate, rare flowers in their natural habitat is a highlight for many visitors. We didn't manage to see these any though. Other spring flowers like エビネ (Calanthe discolor) can also be spotted along the trail.
Logistics: The primary access point is the 峠駐車場 (Toge Parking Lot), which has toilets and vending machines. The trail is well-marked, but using a hiking app like Yamap is recommended for navigation. We came, however, by bus, which was a little confusing changing on route from Yaizu Station from the eventual bus stop. Coming back a small minivan bus often has to be reserved in advanced, however it ran anyway in golden week.
