The first time I had ever seen the name 'Langkawi' passing by was when I was googling for where the show Survivor or as we call it Expedition Robinson was being recorded. The whole idea of a group of islands (and ofcourse some great editting) which a lot of them are inhabited just has something intruiging to me.
So I was interested on more about these islands and I found out that Langkawi was located on the border of Thailand and Malaysia. There is where the Malacca strait (a really well known shipping route from Asia to Europe) turns into the Andaman sea which is known for its islands in Thailand all being connected to each other.
You can reach the island of Langkawi by boat coming from mainland Malaysia and it also has an airstrip for some connection.
I guess coming from not being all that fond about flying you already know what my choice was in there right?
Ow the views and islands everywhere..sweeet!!!
Langkawi is big!!
When entering the harbour coming from mainland there was this gigantic nautic terminal building which looked more like an airport terminal than a ferry terminal, only then I realised it was still another hour to get to the other side of the island
In my mind, for some reason islands are small...But that is hardly ever the case honestly. But it did have this really nice jungle vibe driving over through the lush green hills.
There were even monkeys just casually hanging around in these trees
So entering the island was a breeze and it was cool to head around. I also even saw a Yachting harbour which immediately made me dream again about sailing these oceans and just picking a random island to moor by.
Drop an anchor at a beautiful place, but still need a harbour every now and then to dodge a storm or get some fuel and water. Well this was possible here on the island and it really surprised me honestly.
What to do on island?
Before heading towards here ofcourse I read some blogs and watched some Youtube on what there is to do on the island and this is always a bit confusing to me. See...if I would only see those things, that meant that I would be eagle feeding or making pictures of the big eagles statue in the harbour.
But who fills their day with making a picture of statue
And ofcourse there is a cablecar which take you to the top of the island for some awesome views and lets everyone walk the same round and make the same snap on there.
And because you can find this on the interwebz that means people go there and als make snaps and content about this which creates even more content about the same thing. Heck, even if you ask you favorite AI model they will come up with the same answers because the models are fed with the same information. See the circle here?? Sighhhhh
Just look at the color of the water there!!
Enough about tourism and the downfall of it, on to the cool stuff. As nearly everywhere in South East Asia the best thing about here was the people! The most friendly, the most chill and also diverse people you run into is just something else (I know and
have a different opinion about this after reading from their stories)
Now as I was on the islands at the same time there were gigantic floodings on the mainland of Malaysia as well as Thailand, a typhoon in Vietnam and a cyclone in the Malacca Stait. As you see on these snaps that was affecting the weather over here.
But..these were more grey skies than gigantic downpours so you dont here me complaining honestly as this was awesome to bussle around in without burning to death instantly.
Islands islands islands
One thing that I people were lyrical about was the beach Pantai Cenang which I decided to check out in the late afternoon for a beer on the beach.
Honestly, this was a beach that was totally taken over by bars and fire shows and every bar had the same game going on. There was also a gigantic building project going on so the skyline will surely change over the next couple of years here.
Was this beach enjoyable? Sure!!! Was it something special to specifically go to Langkawi for? Nehhh not really.
Jetski!
I did go around and explore the islands for a bit. You can do this with a small boat tour or you can do this by jetski which you are able to drive yourself.
And wow..this was something else. I had expected to just around for a bit on the water but this was a full blown turbo racing the waters kind of thing.
Nature friendly? Nehhh not really at all if I am honest with jetskis blasting by at 70 kms per hour(!!!), but admittingly ...it was super fun!!
Also some slow cruising going on
This tour also passed a sweet water lake which you had to do a little hike to get there. With some shacks with snacks this ofcourse was a tourist trap as many others but still nicely done.
The freshwater lake had options for swimming which needed a mandatory life vest if you wanted to swim and I was super surprised about people all of a sudden jumping in the water with these vests while they actually told me that they werent able to swim.
Honestly...if I wasn't able to swim I wouldn't trust my life to a little life vest, but hey who am I ;)
On the path there were some monkeys waiting to see if you would drop some food so they could snatch it. Looks cute but these guys are smart!!
So eveything all together I very much enjoyed Langkawi as it is super diverse. But brace yourself, you really need to get out of the loop to get there and see something else. Then you will really find the gems that everyone talks about that are so hidden.
