In the far south of Portugal stands the city of Faro, capital of the Algarve.
The city has a rich cultural, historical and architectural heritage.
It is perfect spot for who wants to relax or party with great beaches and a lively student atmosphere.
The Arco da Vila, is the start of the discovery of the Old Town of Faro, it is also called the seafront gate.
This opening in the old walls dates from the Moorish period and was renovated in 1812 by the an Italian architect.
It marks the entry into the historic city.
Built in 1251, just after the reconquest of the city by the Christians from the Moors, the Cathedral was partially destroyed by the English in 1596
Large parts of the original medieval Cathedral were also destroyed in the earthquake of 1755.
Now, the Cathedral displays elements of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture.
The Gothic church is a beautiful example of wood carving and religious artefacts, here are just a few examples..
We continue our visit with the Archaeological Museum of Faro where we have a great point of view of the city.
The old convent of Nossa Senhora Assunção, which dates back to the 16th century is the house of the museum.
Throughout our visit we can see remains from the Roman period as well as religious pieces from the region.
Interesting museum to explore.
