Hey Hive Friends,
Today I would like to introduce you to Boppard am Rhein. And this should be the end of my series of posts about the sights on the Rhine or in the immediate vicinity of Koblenz. The city is also simply called "Boppard". It is located in the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley in the Rhine-Hunsrück district in Rhineland-Palatinate.
Among other things, Boppard is known for its clean air, and is ain recognized climatic health resort. Did you know that there is such a thing? I didn't ;). But admittedly, the air here was actually a lot better and cleaner than in Cologne. No trace of exhaust fumes or similar.
But Boppard is at least as famous for something else as for its clean air: for its winegrowing. As so often in the regions of the Rhine, which are not far from Koblenz, wine growing takes place here.
The steepest railroad line in Germany
But it is not only the clean air that is so pleasant here. The climate is surprisingly mild. The landscape, as so often, romantic. In the distance we can see some castles. Really everywhere in and around Boppard we find historical buildings, half-timbered houses or something else culturally interesting. So a city completely after my taste;)
What also makes Boppard so special: It is located on the largest loop of the Rhine. In addition, the steepest railroad line in Germany is located here. The railroad runs from Boppard via Buchholz to Emmelshausen. We did not go by train, the friend I visited went by train once. She tells emir that they drove several times over bridges and tunnels, and that with many meters of altitude.
Emerald lizards and wine
In addition, Boppard is home to many rare animal and plant species. Emerald lizards, which are actually more common in the Mediterranean region, also live here. We could even see one when we went up a hill a bit into the nature. She was unfortunately a bit shy and was gone just as quickly as I had spotted her. A very beautiful animal.
To come back to the wine;) As in many haeliegenden places here on the Rhine, wine growing has a great importance in Boppard. Already in the 7th century wine was grown here. Thereby the sites where wine is grown are extremely steep. They are one of the steepest sites in all of Germany. The vine slopes take up a lot of space here. The main grape varieties are Riesling, Kerner, Müller-Thurgau, Dornfelder and Pinot Noir. Do you like to drink any of them?:) I like just about any wine.
Boppard - a must for all wine lovers!
If you are a good wine connoisseur or just love wine like me, you must definitely come to Boppard. I can really recommend it to you! Boppard is extremely famous for its wine and especially for its quality. At awards, Boppard wines are always found on the first places. I think you can taste that too.
If you don't have that much money, you can also take wine tastings. You can also learn a lot about wine. The offer comes from the vintners of the city. If you are in Boppard, if you have enough time, make sure you visit one of the wine cellars. We didn't have enough time that day, unfortunately, since Boppard was only a short stopover, but I heard a lot of good things about it.
a small wine tasting - what wine would you have used? There was such a wide selection!
Rich in hiking trails and unspoiled nature
Instead, we went up the hills and did some hiking. Especially during Corona I discovered my joy for hiking. Well, what can I say, I think in the last two years everyone found a new hobby ;). Boppard is more than suitable for hiking. Boppard offers several thousand hectares of forest. Much of it is natural. There are many hiking trails, which are well marked. Believe me, if I don't get lost, you won't either ;). We have chosen one of the Rhine heights for hiking. You can also walk along the Rhine or visit one of the side valleys. Boppard really has a lot to offer!
Pick a sunny day when you come here - I had such a vacation feeling - and that, although I was only about 1, 5 hours by car from Cologne. There are not only quiet corners here, but also lively squares and alleys. So t o say a mix. A city with really many facets.
I hope you enjoyed my post about Boppard. Why would you go to Boppard - for the wine or rather to visit the beautiful vineyards along the Rhine? Do you know the Rhine region with its winegrowing or have you been there yourself? What did you like best there? Feel free to write your feedback in the comments. See you next time !
