Hey guys,
Today I would like to tell you something about Wangerooge. Part one already exists, so feel free to visit my blog ;).
There are two lighthouses on Wangerooge that we visited. I would like to introduce both of them to you today.
An old and a new lighthouse
On the island there is the old and the new lighthouse. The old lighthouse stands in the centre of the village. This place was a rather lonely place in the east of the island when the lighthouse was founded. The new lighthouse in the west of the island also has a predecessor: the old west tower was blown up in 1914. So there is a new lighthouse in the centre of the village and an old lighthouse in the west of the island.
One of the highest lighthouses in the North Sea
You can see the new lighthouse in the pictures below this text. What makes it very special is that it can be seen from every point on the island. Especially when you set foot on the island for the first time, both lighthouses are directly visible and welcome us.
The new lighthouse is "only" 64 metres high. But that's enough to win first place in the ranking of the highest building on Wangerooge ;). The new lighthouse is even one of the highest lighthouses in the North Sea.
And that is why the lighthouse was built: The Jade fairway was deepened, so there had to be a new leading light to prevent it from running aground on the sandbank foothills of the Wangerooger Plate. The lighthouse was used for the first time in 1969.
Aluminium cladding because of the harsh weather
The new lighthouse was originally clad in red and white tiles. However, the harsh North Sea weather prevailed. Instead, the lighthouse was fitted with aluminium cladding. That is why the lighthouse looks the way it does today. To be honest, I was a bit surprised by its "façade" when I saw it for the first time. But somehow it sets it apart from other lighthouses, what do you think?
The flash of the new lighthouse shines red and is still visible a whole 21 nautical miles away. This makes it one of the strongest beacons in Europe. The beacon also secures the Weser fairway, which lies further out. Do you like red or white lights on lighthouses better? Or a completely different colour (do they exist?) I have to say, I especially like white lights, they are usually a bit brighter.
There is also a white leading light for securing Jade and Weser shipping and a secondary light. The lighthouse even has a radar system.
From the plateau of the new lighthouse you have a beautiful view over the landscape of Wangerooge, you can also see the town of Wangerooge and the plateau is perfect for all those who like to observe the weather more. Unfortunately, you can't climb the new lighthouse - but you can climb the old lighthouse!
Now you're probably wondering what the old lighthouse looks like - but I'll tell you in my next post - how did you like this post? Have you ever been to Wangerooge and visited the lighthouses? Even though Wangerooge is a very small island and I'm more of a North Sea person, I like the island very much. Probably also because Wangerooge is so small. No cars, no noise, but fresh wind and the rough sea. Feel free to write your feedback in the comments. See you next time and thanks for stopping by!
