Let me take you to Nachi Taisha, a Shinto shrine located in Nachikatsuura in Wakayama Prefecture and is one of the major shrine destinations for Kumano Kodo (Pilgrimage).
We took the Nakahechi route starting off at Kii-Tanabe, and on our last leg, we decided to walk the famous Daimonzaka slope, a cobblestone paved trail with centuries old cedar trees, wearing Heian period kimono (I totally was super thrilled about the idea!). Please don't judge us, we wanted to fully experience the pilgrimage!
Kevin, as always, was happy to get along (he'll win the most supportive husband award one day). The kimono rental is just right in front of the Daimonzaka torii, about 2500JPY for 2 hours. The owner was a middle-aged lady, who was such a darling, helped us dress up and explained each layer of the kimono.
We underestimated walking on those geta (traditional Japanese slippers), especially that Kevin's ankle was still healing from an injury. Along the way, we saw wild deers crossing the slope and one even stopped to stare at us. It must've been amused at seeing at unusual creatures like us, lol.
You probably know already what the best part of the hike was. Yes, it was that picturesque gigantic waterfall gracing the Nachi Taisha shrine. I just couldn't get over it, it was a magnificent view. Around the main shrine are old traditional shops selling souvenirs and refreshments. Ahh, Japan, the level of convenience is remarkable!
