En el centro del Vedado, justo en la intersección de las calles 17 y H, se alza una casona que es mucho más que un edificio, es un emblema de la cultura cubana. Esta majestuosa mansión, que actualmente alberga la sede de la Unión de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba (UNEAC), combina una arquitectura ecléctica de gran belleza con una profunda carga histórica.

In the heart of Vedado, right at the intersection of 17th and H Streets, stands a mansion that is much more than just a building—it is an emblem of Cuban culture. This majestic mansion, which currently houses the headquarters of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC), combines beautifully eclectic architecture with a profound historical weight.

Esta mansión de dos plantas, antes de ser lo que es hoy, fue la residencia privada del adinerado banquero catalán, propietario del Banco Gelats, Juan Gelats Botet, quien vivió en ella desde 1920 hasta 1959.

This two-story mansion, before becoming what it is today, was the private residence of a wealthy Catalan banker, owner of the Banco Gelats, Juan Gelats Botet, who lived there from 1920 to 1959.

Esta obra es un ejemplo de la arquitectura ecléctica que caracterizó la República, donde se mezclan estilos clásicos y modernistas. Su volumetría variada, sus bellos y generosos jardines y su imponente reja perimetral, la convierten en una de las tantas construcciones emblemáticas del Vedado. Cuanta con un estilo y diseñomuy popular entre la alta burguesía cubana de principios del siglo XX.

This work is an example of the eclectic architecture that characterized the Republic, where classical and modernist styles blend. Its varied volume, its beautiful and generous gardens, and its imposing perimeter ironwork fence make it one of the many iconic buildings of Vedado. It features a style and design that were very popular among the Cuban upper bourgeoisie in the early 20th century.

Posee varios elementos distintivos. Su entrada principal se destaca por estar en una esquina y está coronada por un impresionante vitral. En su interior, un vestíbulo central con una majestuosa escalera de mármol blanco organiza el resto de los espacios.

It has several distinctive elements. Its main entrance stands out because it is located on a corner and is crowned by an impressive stained glass window. Inside, a central foyer with a majestic white marble staircase organizes the rest of the spaces.

La imagen de su exterior es una verja de hierro forjado que le da un aspecto monumental y forma parte de su atractivo estético.

The exterior features a wrought iron gate that gives it a monumental appearance and is part of its aesthetic appeal.

En su interior, destacan una hermosa escalera de caracol y vitrales de colores, que matizan la luz tropical y llenan las estancias de un ambiente mágico y colorido.

Inside, a beautiful spiral staircase and colorful stained glass windows stand out, softening the tropical light and filling the rooms with a magical, colorful atmosphere.

Sus habitaciones y espacios fueron convertidos en oficinas, tanto en la primera como en la segunda.

Its rooms and spaces were converted into offices, both on the first and second floors.

Fue a partir de 1961, con la fundación de la UNEAC, cuando adquirió su verdadera dimensión ya que esta es la organización sociocultural y profesional de artistas cubanos, escritores, músicos, actores, pintores, escultores, y artistas de otros géneros. Desde entonces, sus salones y jardines han sido punto de encuentro de de la intelectualidad cubana, desde Nicolás Guillén y Alejo Carpentier hasta Miguel Barnet y Nancy Morejón. La mansión ha sido el centro donde se ha forjado y debatido la política cultural de Cuba.

It was from 1961, with the founding of UNEAC, that it acquired its true dimension, as this is the socio-cultural and professional organization of Cuban artists, writers, musicians, actors, painters, sculptors, and artists of other genres. Since then, its halls and gardens have been a meeting point for Cuban intellectuals, from Nicolás Guillén and Alejo Carpentier to Miguel Barnet and Nancy Morejón. The mansion has been the center where Cuba's cultural policy has been forged and debated.

La antigua residencia del banquero Gelats se ha transformado en el hogar de los artistas e intelectuales cubanos. En múltiples ocasiones la he visitidado para asistir a diferentes actividades culturales, premiaciones de concursos, etc. En su patio lateral izquierdo se encuentra "El Hurón Azul", espacio abierto con mesas y sillas donde se ganen tertulias o simplemente se va a conversar con los amigos.

The former residence of the banker Gelats has been transformed into the home of Cuban artists and intellectuals. On many occasions I have visited it to attend various cultural events, contest award ceremonies, etc. In its left side courtyard is "El Hurón Azul" (The Blue Ferret), an open space with tables and chairs where gatherings are held or where you can simply go to chat with friends.

Aquí vamos la sala "Villenas", sitio donde se realizan eventos de carácter provincial y nacional.

Here we have the "Villenas" hall, a venue for provincial and national events.

En sus patios y jardines primas los tinajones y el color verde donde no puede faltar una palma real, elemento importante en nuestro paisaje.

In its courtyards and gardens, clay water jars (tinajones) and the color green prevail, where a royal palm (palma real), an important element of our landscape, is never missing.

Debido a su innegable valor arquitectónico y, sobre todo, por ser el escenario del nacimiento de una de las instituciones culturales más importantes del país, la mansión fue declarada Monumento Nacional en 2009 por la Comisión Nacional de Patrimonio. La belleza de su arquitectura ecléctica y la vitalidad de la historia que encierra hacen de esta mansión un símbolo perdurable del espíritu creador de Cuba.

Due to its undeniable architectural value and, above all, for being the setting where one of the country's most important cultural institutions was born, the mansion was declared a National Monument in 2009 by the National Heritage Commission. The beauty of its eclectic architecture and the vitality of the history it contains make this mansion an enduring symbol of Cuba's creative spirit.
