After a week packed with work, deadlines, and digital fatigue, we found ourselves craving something simple yet soul-soothing. So on two consecutive Saturday nights, my boyfriend, our fluffy Chow Chow, and I ventured into the heart of Manila, to the iconic Rizal Park, lovingly known as Luneta.
Luneta Park is more than just a historical landmark. It’s a sprawling 58-hectare oasis(based from my research) nestled between the chaos and charm of Manila.
Situated on the eastern shore of Manila Bay, the park plays a significant role in shaping the history of the Philippines. The execution of Filipino patriot José Rizal on December 30, 1896 in the same area fanned the flames of the 1896 Philippine Revolution against the Kingdom of Spain. The park was officially named in his honor, and the monument enshrining his remains serves as the park's symbolic focal point. (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rizal_Park)
As soon as we stepped onto its grounds, the city’s noise faded into the background. The air felt lighter, the trees whispered in the breeze, and our fur baby’s excitement was contagious. With his lion-like mane and waddling gait, our Chow Chow trotted ahead, tail high and nose twitching. We followed his lead, letting him explore the wide paths and open lawns. Whenever he got tired, we’d find a bench or a quiet patch of grass to sit, sip water, and simply breathe.
No Manila night is complete without street food. We munched on fishballs, kwek-kwek, and taho while our Chow Chow lounged beside us, occasionally perking up at the scent of grilled isaw. It was simple, delicious, and made even better by the company. However, I wasn’t able to take photos on these scenes due to excitement to eat.
We met fellow fur parents, exchanged grooming tips, and shared laughs over our pets’ quirks. It’s amazing how a shared love for animals can spark instant connections.
Why Luneta Will Always Be a Favorite
Luneta isn’t just a park. It’s a reminder that joy doesn’t need to be extravagant. It’s found in moonlit walks, shared silence, and the soft thump of furry paws on pavement. It’s where history meets heart, and where city lights become stars in your own little story.
We’ll be back, no doubt, for more strolls, more snapshots, and more memories made under the Manila sky.
