Pointe Gourde Peninsula
Chaguaramas in Trinidad is situated on the north western side of the island popularly known for its lavish night parties and great beaches, water parks, kayaking and other fun boating activities. There are a lot of awesome hiking trails as well! Today we explore Point Gorde a small outcrop of land or peninsula that is connected to the mainland by a small neck. Most specifically we will be taking a nice walk in and around Coral Cove where boats are docked and there is a nice place where you can get food and is a popular place where tourist sailors park their boats when they visit the island.
As you can see, There are a great many boats as well as sprawling vistas that are home to lust undulating hills and mountains, each of which have their own breathtaking stories to tell and explore. As you can tell, Chaguaramas is extremely over farmed for its charm and beauty, which kind of, ironically takes away from it!
We started off early in the morning leaving home around 5:30 am and heading north towards Chaguaramas. We usually go hiking for excercise at the Bamboo Cathedral which is what the blog is going to be about tomorrow, so that is why we left so early. Our intention was to head there first then come to Point Gourde to explore and get something to eat after!
Heres a little sneak peak of us at the Bamboo Cathedral hike, look out for the blog tomorrow! After this nice and relaxing nature walk, we headed towards Point Gourde!
The entrance to the cove is preceded by the Inn or motel that the sailors who visit the island stay at when they dock. This is usually referred to as Crews Inn though the name has changed many times and its look remained the same as the light house tower that is red and white is always used as a landmark very popularly.
As we walked along the coastline, our gazes were always filled with lush green hills and an abundance of docked water craft that the rich and lavish had more than enough disposable income to buy. I imagined the amount of fun it would be to be able to sail anywhere you would like to go in the Caribbean with you yacht! Heck, being able to sail to our sister island Tobago at any time at all would be amazing!
We had to walk through a paved walkway to get to the jetty on the other side which was lined with nice flowers and plants, to the left was the Crews Inn Restaurant where we would be later getting our after morning workout breakfast! The smell was already getting to us and increased our level of feeling famished after a long nature walk!
We noticed that the boats were parked right up to the restaurant area and I quickly realized the name "Crews Inn" was very apt as it was an Inn, but also you can literally just cruise in with your yacht and have a meal as well!
On the other side of the walkway was this view of the whole marina and that of Coral Cove. As you can see, the waters in this sheltered area are extremely calm making them amazing for harboring water vessels and for conducting repairs for sailors passing through.
This was the walkway that took us along the length of the cove and the multiple jetties along the way. We were not quite sure what awaited us here but we would have been satisfied just exploring a new area anyway.
In the shot above, we managed to capture what seemed like the largest yacht in the marina, imagine sailing on the open seas for weeks at a time with only the waves in your way!
As we walking along admiring the yachts we saw that some were available for private charters which was quite exciting! One could use this for wedding proposals and private dinners at sunset out in beautiful bays that were in Chaguaramas itself.
The above shot was the view of the marina at the middle of the walkway that gave a great composition of the hills and the yachts in foreground.
Another wider angle view.
At the very end of the walkway that housed all of the jetties, was a stairway that lead to the left complemented by a well kept garden of sorts with shrubs, palms and other trees. Right about here, we could see directly below the waters and there were a lot of debris and garbage under there that would have fallen off the yachts and dinghies over the years. I wonder if there were any awesome high value cast aways?
Up the stairway was a lush garden with trees and a stone path walkway. IN the distance we saw a solitary canon maybe left back from the colonial days when we were once a British colony. This area felt very zen and calming where we sat and chat for a while talking in the serenity.
After we had our fill, we decided it was getting late and started headed back to the restaurant area to get our much needed first meal of the day. The above photo was the view of the marina from on the stairway. It also is a great showcasing of the path we took during the journey!
On the way back we tried to enter and check out the duty free shop to see what we could get but they were not yet open. We were quite fascinated by the large blue door and the aesthetics that gave it such a great old timey sea look.
On entering the restaurant, we saw that they were just now setting up to take breakfast orders and so we would be getting freshly made food! The smell was so tantalizing and I could not wait to eat! I ordered the club sandwich on recommendation from a New Zealander who was visiting and was staying at the Inn and also came for breakfast!
This was what it looked like, a toasted cheese and vegetable sandwich with a great chadon beni dip (a local seasoning mix of flavors). It was just what I needed to start the day after such a physically strenuous morning!
All in all, we have many more Chaguaramas experiences to share with you coming up! I do hope you enjoyed coming along with us to explore the coral cove at Point Gourde. If you look at it on a map it really looks like a gourde growing from the mainland! Thanks a lot for coming along, cheers!
