"For the first time" (a phrase that is already customary in this travel series, because, as you know, I made a list of places I had never been to so I could finally visit them) we were at the great Theater of Havana "Alicia Alonso". It was exactly the same day that my friend @Yecier and I went to the National Capitol, do you remember that publication? We spent that day from one place to another, there will still be another post and many photos of the 3rd place we went to that same day 馃槀.

"Por primera vez" (frase que ya es costumbre en esta serie de viaje, porque, como saben, hice una lista de sitios a los que nunca hab铆a ido para visitarlos finalmente) estuvimos en el gran Teatro de La Habana "Alicia Alonso". Fue justo el mismo d铆a que fuimos mi amigo @Yecier y yo al Capitolio Nacional, 驴recuerdan esa publicaci贸n? Esa jornada nos la pasamos de un lugar a otro, todav铆a quedar谩 otra publicaci贸n y muchas fotos del 3er sitio al que fuimos ese mismo d铆a 馃槀.
Standing at the entrance to the stairs to go up to the Capitol, some people stood on the terrace of the Gran Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso, located right next door. We were eager to know if it was really part of the tour of the installation, or if it was just some special group of people with the tremendous luck to get there. -Maybe they are dancers who are going to record a video up there -said

The reception at the facility was not very friendly, which usually happens in Cuba in places like these when they perceive that they are not tourists, but the Cubans themselves. It is a contempt that we suffer at the hands of our own compatriots, yes 馃様, national tourism is not well served. When we arrived, the lady at the reception barely attended to us. However, some foreigners arrived behind us and we immediately went to meet them. Finally, we managed to be attended to, they explained to us that the next tour would be in about 45 minutes, so we took advantage and went to eat something on the Boulevard de San Rafael, where we found some very delicious Creole food at a very good price.
El recibimiento en la instalaci贸n no fue muy afable, suele pasar en Cuba en sitios como 茅stos cuando perciben que no se trata de turistas, si no de los propios cubanos. Es un desprecio que sufrimos a manos de nuestros propios compatriotas, s铆 馃様, el turismo nacional no es bien atendido. Cuando llegamos, la se帽ora de la recepci贸n apenas nos atendi贸. Sin embargo, detr谩s de nosotros llegaron unos extranjeros y enseguida fue a su encuentro. Finalmente, logramos que nos atendieran, nos explicaron que el pr贸ximo tour ser铆a en unos 45 minutos, as铆 que aprovechamos y nos fuimos a comer algo al Boulevard de San Rafael, d贸nde encontramos unas comidas criollas muy ricas y a muy buen precio.
When we returned, we finally managed to enter the facility. Actually, it wasn't what I expected. It fell far short of my expectations. It is still under repair, it has been restored for several years, but there are spaces that already seem to be ready and the tourist guide confirmed this to me. However, they look hollow, without decoration, as if they lacked finishing.
On the first floor, at the entrance, there is a model of the Theatre. Just behind it is the statue of Alicia Alonso, where we took a couple of fun photos with Cuba's first dancer and a reference for the world.
Cuando volvimos, finalmente logramos entrar a la instalaci贸n. En realidad, no era lo que esperaba. Se qued贸 muy por debajo de mis expectativas. A煤n est谩 en reparaci贸n, lleva varios a帽os siendo restaurado, pero hay espacios que ya parecen estar listos y as铆 mismo me lo confirm贸 la gu铆a tur铆stica. Sin embargo, se ven huecos, sin decoraci贸n, como si les faltase acabado.
En la primera planta, a la entrada hay una maqueta del Teatro. Justo detr谩s se encuentra la estatua de Alicia Alonso, donde nos tomamos par de fotos divertidas junto a la primera bailarina de Cuba y referente para el mundo.
There is no doubt that architecturally it is one of the icons of the city. The current building was built in 1914 to house the headquarters of the Galician Center of Havana and was the venue where the Galician Anthem march was played for the first time in 1907. The building is the work of the Belgian architect Paul Belau. The place was acquired, along with the surrounding land, by the Galician Center to build its Social Palace in 1906. Built in a neo-baroque style, it was modeled on European baroque constructions, which is why stone carvings and sculptures abound.
No cabe duda de que arquitect贸nicamente es uno de los 铆conos de la ciudad. El actual edificio fue levantado en 1914 para acoger la sede del Centro Gallego de La Habana y fue el recinto donde se toc贸 por primera vez la marcha del Himno gallego en 1907. El edificio es obra del arquitecto belga Paul Belau. El lugar fue adquirido, junto con los terrenos aleda帽os, por el Centro Gallego para edificar su Palacio Social en 1906. Construido en estilo neobarroco, tom贸 como modelo las construcciones del barroco europeo, por lo que abundan las tallas y esculturas en piedra.
On the tour we learned that between the years 1834 and 1838, Captain General Miguel de Tac贸n y Rosique was Governor of Cuba and ordered the construction of a theater with greater capacity than the pre-existing Teatro Principal, which was called Teatro Tac贸n in his honor. Even in the backyard of the current Gran Teatro Alicia Alonso are the plaques of the former foundation.
The person in charge of the new work at that time was the Catalan slave businessman Francisco Mart铆 y Torrens. The Tac贸n Theater was inaugurated on February 28, 1838, giving a carnival in the still unfinished work. But it was not until April 15 of that same year when it was officially inaugurated with the staging of the play Don Juan de Austria, starring the famous Cuban actor Francisco Covarrubias, creator of the national vernacular theater and initiator of costumbrismo in Cuban literature. It was the work of the architect Antonio Mayo, who conceived it with a predominant eclectic style, with 90 boxes, more than 20 rows and capacity to receive about two thousand spectators, becoming the stage par excellence for the Creole aristocracy.
It is said that in its time, the Tacon was the largest and most luxurious theater on the American continent 馃槺; and for its technical qualities the third in the world, preceded only by the Scala in Milan and the Vienna Opera 馃槺. Among the most significant artists who were in the theater were the Cuban intellectuals Jos茅 Mart铆 and Gertrudis G贸mez de Avellaneda, crowned with laurels, in its great room, in 1860, by the Cuban poet Luisa P茅rez de Zambrana 鉂わ笍鉁嶏笍馃摎.
En el tour nos enteramos que entre los a帽os 1834 y 1838 el Capit谩n General Miguel de Tac贸n y Rosique era Gobernador de Cuba y mand贸 a construir un teatro con mayor capacidad que el preexistente Teatro Principal, al cual le llamaron Teatro Tac贸n en su honor. A煤n en el traspatio del actual Gran Teatro Nacional Alicia Alonso se encuentran las tarjas de la otrora fundaci贸n.
El encargado de la nueva obra fue en aquel entonces el empresario negrero catal谩n Francisco Mart铆 y Torrens. El Teatro Tac贸n se inaugur贸 el 28 de febrero de 1838, dando un carnaval en la a煤n inconclusa obra. Pero no fue hasta el 15 de abril de ese mismo a帽o cuando qued贸 oficialmente inaugurado con la puesta en escena de la obra Don Juan de Austria, protagonizada por el famoso actor cubano Francisco Covarrubias, creador del teatro vern谩culo nacional e iniciador del costumbrismo en la literatura cubana. Fue obra del arquitecto Antonio Mayo, quien lo concibi贸 con un estilo ecl茅ctico predominante, con 90 palcos, m谩s de 20 filas y capacidad para recibir a unos dos mil espectadores, convirti茅ndose en el escenario por excelencia de la aristocracia criolla.
Se dice que en su 茅poca, el Tac贸n fue el teatro m谩s grande y lujoso del continente americano 馃槺; y por sus cualidades t茅cnicas el tercero del orbe, precedido solo por la Scala de Mil谩n y el de la 脫pera de Viena 馃槺. Entre los artistas m谩s significativos que estuvieron en el teatro se encontraban los intelectuales cubanos Jos茅 Mart铆 y Gertrudis G贸mez de Avellaneda, coronada con laureles, en su gran sala, en 1860, por la poetisa cubana Luisa P茅rez de Zambrana 鉂わ笍鉁嶏笍馃摎.
The Gran Teatro de La Habana underwent major repairs between 2013 and 2015, reopening its doors on January 1, 2016.
The reconstructive work covered the entire property. The facades, lobbies, boxes, roof and plank were restored. Likewise, the theater was equipped with new furniture, curtains, an air conditioning system, acoustics, stage mechanics, rehearsal rooms for the dancers and the orchestra, a recording studio and more than 20 dressing rooms 馃槺 and bathrooms, many premises that previously existed in the property and that had nothing to do with the culture system were removed.
The rescue was total but respecting the original idea, and the technological resources used have been combined with the heritage criteria that identifies it.
However, in no time at all it closed again to repair its locations. To date, it continues without providing service to the viewing public. They plan to open in February of next year 2024.
El Gran Teatro de La Habana fue sometido a una reparaci贸n capital entre 2013 y 2015, reabriendo sus puertas el 1 de enero de 2016.
El trabajo reconstructivo abarc贸 todo el inmueble. Fueron restaurados las fachadas, vest铆bulos, palcos, cubierta y tabloncillo. Asimismo, se dot贸 al teatro con nuevo mobiliario, telones, sistema de climatizaci贸n, ac煤stica, mec谩nica esc茅nica, salones de ensayos para los bailarines y la orquesta, un estudio de grabaci贸n y m谩s de 20 camerinos 馃槺 y ba帽os, muchos locales que antes exist铆an en el inmueble y que no ten铆an que ver con el sistema de cultura fueron retirados.
El rescate fue total pero respetando la idea original, y los recursos tecnol贸gicos empleados se han conjugado con el criterio de patrimonio que lo identifica.
Sin embargo, en no poco tiempo volvi贸 a cerrar para volver a reparar sus locaciones. Hasta la fecha contin煤a sin brindar servicio al p煤blico espectador. Preveen abrir en febrero del pr贸ximo a帽o 2024.
