120-plus days in lockdown, sitting at home, walking in the garden and only seeing the inside of food stores and pharmacies, really has been hard!
Some restrictions have been lifted so we can now go to the beach, but bathing is not allowed.
People are crafty though, as surfing is allowed everyone goes to the beach with either surf boards or boogie boards, masks on till they get into the water.
It felt like being in heaven on earth taking a drive down to South Beach and go for a walk along the Ushaka Promenade; this is just past the Addington Provincial Hospital.
Addington Children's Hospital which was built in 1931 had fallen into decay, and the renovation project kicked off in 2010 with a new vision for this once thriving children's hospital:
“Discarded in the past,
Healed by the present,
For the future,
With love,”
However, being a government project where everything is done at a snail's pace, the first phase was only completed in 2017.
We were chasing Coffee after hearing from friends about the best coffee along the beachfront being served from a little van by The Coffee Guys.
These guys were hit really hard by our lockdown, as they could not operate at all for the first couple of weeks of lockdown plus are now restriced to only the beach as they would normally move around to shows and exhibitions which have not happened since end of March!
Our friends were right, this was the best cappucino we've had for a very long time!
It was interesting seeing people wearing masks at the beach and most people did try and keep their distance.
Walkers, runners, cyclists, surfers, body boarders and some on skateboards and other contraptions on wheels, were all out on the promenade enjoying the winter sunshine.
The Gyms are still closed but there's no stopping the enthusiasts who came and did their routine right there on the lawns.
This area is right near the Durban harbour entrance and we watched this big ship coming into the harbour.
That weird building on stilts in the sea at the back is a little restaurant called Moyos on the Pier.
We're almost at the entrance to Ushaka Marine World, which is one of our country's most popular marine theme parks but has also been closed since the start of lockdown. They offer water rides, an oceanarium that sits inside what looks like an old ship, dolphin, seal & penguin shows, shopping, beach activities & much more but I wonder how much they're losing during lockdown!
Many little places to stop off and have a bite.
Masks on but determined to keep fit and enjoy the sunshine and sea breeze.
We felt like we were still part of the old normal after our little excursion even though the masks stayed on for most of the morning and sanitizers were close at hand all the time. 88 year old Mom Lily came along as she hates being cooped up at home and enjoyed just sitting at a table with her mask on watching the world go by.
So we came to the end of our walk and felt a whole lot better after yet another week of nothing being said and done by our government, and decided to do this more often.
I really hope things are improving in your part of the world!
