I've been trying to squeeze as much as I can out of our trip down to the Western Cape in that wondrous time before Covid struck, so still have a couple of little gems to share with you.
Today we will be taking a walk to the harbour town of Mossel Bay at the start of the beautiful Garden Route in the Western Cape, South Africa; often shrouded in a thick salty mist and this day was no different.
Mossel Bay is known for the wide Santos Beach and the 19th-century Cape St. Blaize Lighthouse. The famed Bartolomeu Dias Museum Complex which houses a Maritime Museum, a Shell Museum and botanical gardens is found in this town.
Bartolomeu Dias was an explorer who sailed past the southernmost tip of Africa and reached the Bay of St Blaize, now Mossel Bay, in February 1488.
The 500 year old Post Office Tree is also found here; this is a giant milkwood tree which was used as a mail collection point from the 1500s so in fact was South Africa’s first post office!
We did not get to see this complex as we were invited for a delicious lunch of Yellow Tail Curry at my friend Pat’s sister; her gorgeous apartment filled with rare artworks overlooks the misty harbor.
We had to get back to our lodgings outside the historic town of Swellendam before nightfall as the last stretch of road is not to be driven on in the dark with all the bends and twists, so Mossel Bay certainly is on our bucket list for a future trip!
The gracious Prince Vincent & Co Building was declared a National Monument, thus preserving a little piece of our country's heritage.
Stunning little container garden on the balcony with an African stone art sculpture keeping watch and the ever misty harbor in the background.
A fascinating and most unusual Chinese wooden sculpture - is it a little man or woman? Very wrinkled though:).
Treasured Sea Shells collection.
A really gorgeous intricate chandelier adorned with porcelain flowers.
And then a view from atop of a beautifully laid table where we enjoyed a delicious meal and sat and talked and laughed the whole afternoon.
It was not easy leaving these lovely people from Mossel Bay but we had to rush back to our holiday home before the sun disappeared behind the mountains and the moon came out!
