Hallo liebe Community,
in den Straßen von Key West tobt wirklich das Leben. Überall sind Menschen unterwegs, Touristen und Einheimische. In der Hauptstraße reiht sich ein geschäft an das andere, immer wieder unterbrochen von Bars, Pubs und Restaurants, sogar ein hard Rock cafe haben sie hier.
Wir suchten uns ein Restaurant mit schönem Außenbereich, in dem sich tatsächlich einige Hühner tummelten. Ich bestellte mir selbstverständlich ein original Island Life Bier, direkt aus Key West und zum Mittagessen einen kubanischen Reis-Bohnen-Fleisch Eintopf. Wenn man schon so nah an Cuba dran ist, muss man das auch ausnutzen dachte ich mir. Es war mein erstes kubanisches Essen seit Jahrzehnten und ich war hellauf begeistert. Wirklich sehr lecker.
Nach dem Essen spazierten wir weiter die Amüsiermeile entlang und kamen an einem Zigarrenladen vorbei. Und natürlich dachte ich mir auch hier, wenn wir schon so nahe an Kuba sind, muss ich auch eine Zigarre probieren. Also kaufte ich eine mit Vanille Macadamia Geschmack um diese später am Abend in der Dämmerung zu genießen. Spoiler: So toll war es nicht, kann aber auch daran gelegen haben, dass ich nicht so auf Zigarren stehe. Aber was sein muss, muss sein :-)
Wir kamen auf unserem Weg auch an einer Bar vorbei, die komplett mit 1 Dollar Noten zugepflastert war. Das war ein Anblick sage ich Euch. Einfach verrückt. Jeder der hier etwas trinkt, klebt einen Dollarschein irgendwohin wo noch Platz ist. Nun kamen wir aber endlich zum nächsten Stop den wir eingeplant hatten. Das Ernest Hemingway Haus. Das Hemingway Haus ist ein faszinierendes privates Museum, das einst die Heimat des Literaturnobelpreisträgers Ernest Hemingway und seiner zweiten Frau Pauline war. Hemingway kam 1928 erstmals nach Key West. 1931 schenkte Paulines Onkel Gus ihnen das Gebäude. Hemingway und Pauline lebten hier bis zu ihrer Scheidung 1940. Hemingway schrieb in diesem Haus einige seiner berühmten Werke, darunter "Die grünen Hügel Afrikas" und "Wem die Stunde schlägt". Das Haus wurde dann später 1968 von den USA zum National Historic Landmark erklärt und dient seitdem als Museum.
Von hier aus hatten wir dann nur noch einen Punkt auf unserer To Do Liste für Key West. Den südlichsten Punkt der USA besuchen. Der "Southernmost Point", ist eine der bekanntesten und meistfotografierten Sehenswürdigkeiten der Stadt. Es handelt sich um eine große, bunt bemalte Boje aus Beton, die den südlichsten Punkt der kontinentalen Vereinigten Staaten markiert. Die Boje kennzeichnet den Punkt auf Key West, der am nächsten an Kuba liegt – genauer gesagt 90 Meilen (ca. 145 km) von Kuba entfernt. Obwohl es sich nicht um den tatsächlichen südlichsten Punkt der kontinentalen USA handelt (dieser liegt auf einem Militärgelände und ist nicht öffentlich zugänglich), ist die Boje zum offiziellen und touristischen "Southernmost Point" geworden. Ursprünglich wurde der südlichste Punkt durch kleine Holzschilder markiert, die jedoch häufig gestohlen wurden. Um diesem Problem Abhilfe zu schaffen und eine dauerhafte Attraktion zu schaffen, wurde die heutige Betonboje im Jahr 1983 von der Stadt Key West aufgestellt. Die Boje hat bereits mehrere Hurrikans überstanden, was ihre Robustheit unter Beweis stellt. Nachdem wir hier, umringt von zahlreichen anderen Touristen, ein Foto gemacht hatten, waren wir von dem ereignisreichen Tag so geschafft, dass meine Familie nicht mal mehr den Weg zurück zum Auto bewältigen wollte. Also holte ich alleine das Auto und ab gings zurück nach Marathon.

Life is really raging in the streets of Key West. People are traveling everywhere, tourists and locals. On the main street, one shop is part of the other, interrupted again and again by bars, pubs and restaurants, even a hard rock cafe you have here.
We were looking for a restaurant with a beautiful outdoor area, in which some chickens actually frolicked. Of course I ordered an original Island Life beer, directly from Key West and for lunch a Cuban rice bean meat stew. If you're already so close to Cuba, you have to take advantage of it too. It was my first Cuban meal for decades and I was thrilled. Really very tasty.
After dinner we continued to walk along the amusing mile and passed a cigar shop. And of course I also thought to myself here, when we are so close to Cuba, I also have to try a cigar. So I bought a macadamia taste with vanilla to enjoy it later in the dusk in the evening. Spoiler: It wasn't that great, but it could also have been because I don't like cigars. But what needs to be :-)
We also passed a bar on our way, which was completely paved with $ 1 dollar. I tell you a sight. Just crazy. Everyone who drinks a little here sticks a dollar's license somewhere where there is still space. Now we finally came to the next stop we had planned. The Ernest Hemingway House. The Hemingway Haus is a fascinating private museum that was once the home of the Nobel Prize winner Ernest Hemingway and his second wife Pauline. Hemingway came to Key West for the first time 1928. In 1931 Pauline's uncle Gus gave them the building. Hemingway and Pauline lived here until their divorce in 1940. Hemingway wrote some of his famous works in this house, including "The Green Hill Africa" and "Who beats the hour". The house was later declared the National Historic Landmark in 1968 by the USA and has served as a museum since then.
From here we only had one point on our to do list for Key West. Visit the southernmost point in the United States. The "Southern Most Point" is one of the best known and most photographed sights of the city. It is a large, colorfully painted concrete buoy that marks the southernmost point of the continental United States. The buoy marks the point on Key West, which is closest to Cuba - more precisely 90 miles (approx. 145 km) from Cuba. Although it is not the actual southernmost point in the continental USA (this is located on a military site and is not open to the public), the boje has become the official and tourist "SouthernMost Point". The southernmost point was originally marked by small wooden signs, but they were often stolen. To remedy this problem and create a permanent attraction, today's concrete buoy was set up by the city of Key West in 1983. The buoy has already survived several hurricanes, which demonstrates its robustness. After we had taken a photo here, surrounded by numerous other tourists, we were able to do the way back to the car from the eventful day so that my family no longer even wanted to cope with. So I got the car alone and went back to marathon.
