Just after we crossed the bridge from Madura, my family and I went to Kenjeran Park which is located in the eastern part of Surabaya, the capital of East Java. On the way to Surabaya, we saw another beautiful sunset from Madura strait that truly awe us. This year, we’ve seen amazing sunrises and sunsets from all over the country. We saw an amazing sunrise from Bromo, sunset in Bali and now another one from Madura. It is just such a rarity for both of us as we don’t live surrounded by nature and we’re always grateful to see them.
In fact, I am very envious of people who get to live in villages or rural parts of the country where nature is abundant for them. I often hear people from the village wanting to go to the city or even a megapolitan like Surabaya with its skyscrapers. This is the part where it makes me realize that we tend to want something we don’t have and see things we couldn’t normally see in our day to day life. Just like myself where I enjoy being in nature and go see beaches, mountains, or even just a jungle with rocks.
Kenjeran park is quite a memorable place to me. I went to this place with my kindergarten friends and their mom on a trip that my family organized. We went to see the beach and this strange animal called the horseshoe crab. As a kid I thought they were alien creatures and was quite fascinated with them. So on this trip, I want to meet them again.
We reached Kenjeran at around 6PM when it’s already quite dark. The tide was low and there were fishermen boats across the bridge to the center of the beach. From this park, we can see Madura strait, island and also the bridge with its shimmering lights. But apart from seeing the Bridge there are more parks and things to do. It was just unfortunate that we reached the place late in the evening and the parks were closed. In the end, I didn't meet horseshoe crab!
As soon as the area got darker, we spotted some fishermen with their sledge. We asked them what they’re going to do and apparently they are going to look for crabs. Had I still had more energy, I would definitely have tried it. But we just had a short conversation and then the man left to search for crabs and sea cucumbers. There’s also sea cucumber and it's a pretty famous snack in this area.
In this area, you can also just chill around the cafe to get toasted corn and also eat some signature dish from Surabaya such as blue mussels soup which if you know how to catch them it’s pretty nasty.
So apparently, to catch these mussels, the bait that they use is human feces. I am not sure how many people know that but that definitely is no food for me. And if you ever see that food, I don’t think you should dare trying that.
We walked around the area and I tried to shoot the bridge. This is the part where I wanted to have better gear to shoot better images of the bridge. It was simply stunning to see the bridge with its light.
In the end, we had dinner at a place called Soto Cak Har which is a place where they sell chicken soup with unlimited shrimp powder. In Surabaya, they are known to serve chicken soup with shrimp powder. So, the overall soup taste is going to be extra savory.
This is the end of my trip from Madura Island. I hope that you’ve been enjoying my story from the island. In the future, I’d like to explore more parts of the island, especially a place called GILI LABAK with its pristine water and great place to dive.
