Time is valuable and once it's lost can’t be recovered.
The 6 hours is a short travelogue where I try to visit the places that are worth six hours of my time and maybe yours too. So this 6 hours will contain some hand-picked places that I have visited and checked around. In the future I might do something like this but in different cities and hopefully countries too. And for the continuation of the previous story from this series, today I am taking you exploring the abandoned quarry that turned into a hip tourist spot.
Who would have thought that there is a reuse value of an old and abandoned quarry?
Apparently, in many parts of the world quarries are now turned into a tourist spot that often attracts large groups of tourists. Just like this place I visited called Breksi Cliff which used to be an old quarry. Despite living in this city for 6 years, only a few days ago I got the chance to explore this area. This place is very famous and often packed with tourists from outside the city and provinces.
And for your information, there is even research dedicated to examining the landscape of abandoned quarries and what makes them attractive. One of the research focused on the quarry in Austria that attempts to explore the determining qualities that makes an old quarry attractive. If you are interested in reading more about the research and what makes an abandoned quarry have a value you can visit this link The Landscape Attractiveness of Abandoned Quarries.
So, what makes abandoned quarries that I visited attractive?
Based on the research above, the qualities that determine an old abandoned quarry's attractiveness is the shape's uniqueness, the aesthetic, people’s interest and the curiosity of the people of said quarry. Breksi cliff has everything mentioned. Though now it’s shape is already artificially crafted, the cliffs are carved with beautiful javanese puppet tales and mythology characters. Another attractive point of the quarry I visited is that from this place, visitors can see the volcano mountain and the city from above the ground. People’s curiosity of this place can also be measured by the visitors who come from all over Indonesia just to visit and take pictures on this cliff.
The Location
Breksi Cliff or in local language,Tebing Breksi is located about 40 minutes from the city. But keep in mind, depending on the traffic as Yogyakarta can get quite congested. This place is easy to reach as long as you follow the google map direction or the road sign. Not to mention, this place is quite well-known. So, hardly people wouldn't know about this place. Even if you rent an ojek, online grab or similar, the drivers know exactly where this place is.
Inside Breksi Cliff
It was around 5 PM when I reached the place. Before getting to the place there is a small entrance fee of 10.000IDR/person. Not to mention the QR code of vaccination status before visiting.
I was expecting to see the sunset as it is considered the best place to do that. However, it was cloudy so I couldn’t see any sunset. All I could see was mist, a bunch of people taking people, and people climbing the cliff to get to the top. I was already quite exhausted by then and didn’t want to climb the cliff. So, I just explored the area below where I tried taking pictures of many interesting objects around the quarry.
The most attractive thing for me is the mountain viewing which is so vast. It’s a great place to take group pictures which I have seen around as well. So many groups of friends taking pictures and some couples lounging on the rocks enjoying the view of the mist. Around the area there are some ponds filled with fishes that when you’re lucky you can spot them.
Though many of my family and friends said this place is better at night, I’d say otherwise. It can get quite dark, especially during cloudy days.
Surrounding the place, there are many photo spots and you can even take pictures with an owl too. You can rent one of the jeeps in this place as well to check out the other places in the area. You can see from my pictures below how dark this place can get.
The Goodbye
As it turned darker, I bid goodbye to the place. I heard this place was supposed to be good at night but I was unfortunate because they didn’t turn on the light when I was there. The weather turned cold and I forgot to bring a jacket. So, I left the place without ever seeing the light illuminating the carved limestones which were said to be amazing. Initially, I wanted to go but the driver told me, “ you still have about 3 hours”. So, I decided to visit the street food market in Yogyakarta called Alun-alun selatan.
