Town of history and nice food
On December 20, 2019, my family and I decided to go for a weekend in Milan, Italy.
Flight
It was a 1 hour flight ✈️ from Sofia 🇧🇬 to Bergamo 🇮🇹.
The city and its landmarks
Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
You can't go to Milan and not pass through one of the symbols of the city - Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II - the most prestigious shopping arcade in the city center.
The gallery is named after the first king of a united Italy - Victor Emmanuel II (1861 - 1878). The construction of the building took 11 years - from 1867 to 1878.
In order to build the building, the old, historic part of the city had to be demolished, which the Milanese did not like at all. But when, 11 years later, in 1878, this architectural masterpiece appeared, they fell in love with it and made it a favorite meeting place. It is often called the "Salon of Milan".
The shopping center has the shape of a Latin cross, 47 m high, and its dome is made of iron and glass, forming an octagonal square in the center. It is there that 3 of the 4 coats of arms of the three capitals of the Kingdom of Italy gather: the wolf is the symbol of Rome, the bull of Turin and the lily of Florence. Milan is depicted with a white flag with a red cross.
According to ancient belief, if you step on the heel of the bull's genitals and wish for something, and then turn three times - it will come true.
The passage connects on foot two of Milan's most important landmarks - Duomo di Milano and La Scala Opera House.
Duomo di Milano
A fundamental part of the architectural and historical face of the city is Piazza del Duomo, on which rises the fantastic beautiful cathedral "Duomo Di Milano" or in short - Milan Cathedral (Milan Cathedral).
Not 10, not 100, but for 579 years the main cathedral of Milan was built, in which the nail of the Holy Cross is kept. Napoleon and Leonardo da Vinci have a hand in the elegant look of the Duomo - today you can see more than 3,000 statues and impressive stained glass windows.
And if you want to feel the spirit of the present, climb on the roof of the Duomo. In clear weather from the roof there is a stunning view of the surroundings, all the way to the snow-capped Alps on the horizon.
Teatro alla Scala, La Scala
La Scala is an opera house in Milan, Italy. The La Scala Theater was designed by the architect Giuseppe Piermarini in 1776 - 1778 on the site of the church of Santa Maria della Scala, whence the name of the famous theater. It was opened on August 3, 1778 with a production of the opera by Antonio Salieri Europa riconosciuta.
Castello Sforzesco
The castle of Sforza or Castello Sforzesco (Castello Sforzesco) is one of the main symbols of Milan. The castle was built in the fifteenth century by Milan's Francesco Sforza. Throughout its history, the castle has repeatedly undergone significant transformations. In the 16th and 17th centuries it was one of the largest citadels in Europe. Sforza Castle is currently home to important cultural institutions and tourist destinations.
Museo Nazionale Scienza e Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci
Built in the 16th century and reconstructed in 1953 by the company Giovanni Bertani and designed by the architect Portalupi. It now occupies a total area of 50,000 m2 and has in its fund more than 15,000 exhibits, 40,000 books and 50,000 units of photographs and videos.
The Golden Fund, of course, is the exhibition of the greatest master - Leonardo da Vinci. His works have a whole floor, here are paintings, sculptures and more than 7,000 drawings with various mechanism.
